Ducks Open Season With Sweep
01/16/26 | Women's Tennis
Oregon starts season 1-0 with a 7-0 win over Vikings.
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon women's tennis team opened its 2026 spring season with a 7-0 sweep of Portland State on Friday at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks (1-0) jumped out to an early lead with doubles wins on courts one and three. Later in singles, UO won five of six singles matches in straight sets before Tilde Jagare, playing at the No. 1 spot in the lineup for the first time in her career, overcame a first-set loss to win in a third-set tiebreak to complete a perfect opening day.
"We have a great group," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "They're very connected. They work hard every day. It's probably the hardest working group we've had. They like to come out extra every single day. So I'm just looking forward to seeing them continue to improve on a weekly basis."
Jagare and Olivia Symons eased by with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Hadley Appling and Virginia Crocker won by an identical score at No. 3.
In singles, Oregon picked up straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 5 and 6 to secure the four points needed for the team victory. Daughters picked up the team's fifth point with a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fourth position in the lineup, and later Crocker earned the fifth point with the same score at No. 3.
Symons, playing at No. 2, turned in a 6-0, 6-1 victory while freshman Hinata Furutani earned her first collegiate dual victory 6-0, 6-0, on court five. Bridget Mihulka won her first set 6-2 before sweeping the second set 6-0.
Nagle deployed three freshmen in the season opener in Appling, Crocker and Furutani. Each earned at least one victory in their dual collegiate debuts.
"I thought they did a great job," Nagle said of her freshmen making their collegiate dual debuts. "It's tough playing your first dual match. It's just a different environment. It's a different feel as an individual sport, jumping into a team environment. There's a lot of nerves and you're no longer just playing for yourself, you're playing for your team."
Oregon leads the all-time series with Portland State 29-0, with Friday's matchup marking the seventh straight season the teams have met.
The Ducks return to the Student Tennis Center for a doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 24 against Idaho (10 a.m.) and New Mexico State (4 p.m.).
