Ducks Rally but Fall Just Short
09/05/25 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Oregon rallied from a halftime deficit and outshot Seattle 18-6, but a Redhawk goal on a set piece proved to be the difference in a 2-1 loss Friday night at Championship Field.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, Washington native Addisen Boyer, who made her first career start Friday night, scored on a corner kick in the 54th minute to draw the Ducks even at 1-1.
But the Redhawks (3-0-3) extended their best start as a Division I program on Alana Lamb's goal off a corner kick in the 70th minute.
"We fought hard tonight," said coach Tracy Joyner. "Tough result. Back-to-back games where we've dominated in shots and struggled to find the back of the net."
How It Happened: The Redhawks scored in the 27th minute on a high ball that was crossed to the far side of the box, where Caroline Penner used a screen to slip the ball past Oregon's defense.
The Ducks (2-4-1) responded in the last 15 minutes of the half when they attempted four of their eight shots in the period.
For the second straight game, an Oregon goal was turned away by team save at the goal line. In the 43rd minute, Seattle goalkeeper Kassidy Kirgan came out of the net on Carly Cormack's corner, and Jayde Holley redirected the ball toward the goal past Kirgan only to have a Redhawk defender clear the ball off the goal line at the last second.
The Ducks outshot the Redhawks 8-3 in the first half. Two of those shots came from Taylor Bryan, who just missed on a scoring attempt that sliced across the mouth of the goal in the seventh minute, and then laced another ball on frame in the 37th minute that Kirgan was able to save.
Oregon carried momentum into the second half and finally broke through eight minutes into the period when Cormack hit a corner kick to the far post where Boyer headed it off Kirgan and into the net.
Seattle regrouped and scored the game winner on a corner kick of their own. Zoe Hopkins fired a shot from close range that deflected off Oregon goalie Caeley Goldstein, but the ball went right to Alana Lamb for the go-ahead goal.
The Ducks had two good looks in the 83rd minute. Ella Ossmussen's shot from the top of the box was saved by Kirgan. Seconds later Holley's service on a free kick was headed for the upper left corner and only a remarkable leaping punch by Kirgan prevented the Ducks from tying the match.
Notable: It was the sixth time in seven games that Oregon has outshot the opposition … Boyer, from Oak Harbor, Wash., led the Ducks with four shots … Along with Boyer, Selah Simms also made her first career start on Friday.
Quotable
Head Coach Tracy Joyner
"We'll be back at it next week. This team is optimistic and we will continue to put in the work. There has been so much growth in such a short time that isn't shown in the score lines."
Up Next: The Ducks open Big Ten play at UCLA Sept. 13 (6 p.m., B1G+).
