Penalty Kicks Help No. 4 UCLA Slip by Oregon
09/13/25 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – For the second straight year, penalty kicks played a decisive role in Oregon's match with No. 4 UCLA.
After a scoreless first half, the Bruins converted on penalty kicks in the 58th and 75th minutes and held off a commendable effort by the Ducks to prevail, 2-0, Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.
"We battled," said Oregon coach Tracy Joyner. "Proud of our effort and mentality. We were organized and committed to our game plan. To not give up a goal in the run of play was really impressive."
How It Happened: Oregon (2-5-1, 0-1-0) withstood an early barrage of volleys from the Bruins (5-2-0, 1-0-0) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Four of UCLA's six shots in the first half came in the first eight minutes of the period. Oregon goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein made a pair of saves during the Bruins' opening rush.
Things settled in after that. In the 19th minute, Lauren Kenny nearly snuck a goal into UCLA's net on a header that just skimmed over the crossbar.
The Ducks also forced the issue in the waning moments of the first half. Jayde Holley lofted a free kick into the box that Cloe Chase got a head on just before she collided with UCLA's goalkeeper, but couldn't get anything on her shot and the ball fell harmlessly away.
In spite of the penalty kicks, the Ducks kept battling in the second half and made several runs into the Bruins' end. Both Taylor Bryan and Carys Hall were credited with shots after halftime.
Notable: The Ducks were outshot for just the second time this season (12-3) … Freshman midfielder Miya Alamares returned to action after missing the last four matches with an injury. She started and played 63 minutes … Freshmen goalkeeper Gia Kiesling made her second appearance of the season. She played 13 minutes and made her first career save.
Quotable
Head Coach Tracy Joyner on Oregon's defensive effort:
"Defenders Jasmine Young, Selah Simms, Jayde Holley and our goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein were big time. Really happy with their effort, leadership and communication."
Up Next: The Ducks return to Eugene to host Illinois on Thursday (7 p.m., Big Ten Network).
