EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon's on-field sweep of Iowa to win the Big Ten Conference championship led to a Duck off-field sweep of the conference pitcher and player of the week awards. Both starting pitcher Grayson Grinsell and second baseman Ryan Cooney claimed their second weekly conference honor of the season for their play over the weekend.
Grinsell, a junior from Reno, Nev., continued his dominance in a key win at Iowa and set the tone for what would be a stellar weekend for the Ducks. The UO ace tossed a two-hit complete-game shutout in Oregon's 10-0 win at Iowa on Thursday. The Ducks' lefty fanned eight and walked just one. The complete game was Grinsell's third in the last five weeks with two of those coming against Iowa and UCLA, the two teams Oregon entered Sunday tied with for the conference lead.
After allowing two runners to reach in the first inning, Grinsell allowed just four base runners the rest of the game with none advancing past first base. From the first to the sixth, he retired 15 of 17 batters faced (1 reached via error). Grinsell lowered his Big Ten-best ERA to 1.36 in conference games and his league-low WHIP in conference play to 0.86.
In all games, his ERA has shrunk to 2.31 (.02 behind the league leader) and his batting average against (.185) and WHIP (0.94) lead the Big Ten.
Cooney, a sophomore from Portland, led Oregon to a series sweep in the final weekend of the regular season to allow Oregon to claim the Big Ten title. The Ducks' sophomore slashed .556/.692/1.444 in the three wins, which included a two-run go-ahead double in the seventh inning of Friday's come-from-behind win.
Cooney, who had extra-base hits in all three games, homered twice while also doubling two times in the series. He had multiple hits and drove in multiple runs in two of the games, while scoring a pair of runs in game one and three of the series.
In the game one win, Cooney reached base three times (1-for-2, 2 BB) while homering. In addition to the go-ahead double in game two, he went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. In the finale, he reached base three times (2-for-3, BB) with two extra-base hits (2B, HR), three RBI and two runs scored. He had an RBI double in the third to give UO a 2-1 lead and added a leadoff HR to spark a four-run sixth inning that broke the game open.
Cooney and Grinsell became the first two Ducks to earn a pair of Big Ten Weekly Awards. They are the seventh and eighth Ducks to win a conference honor this season. Dominic Hellman claimed Big Ten Player of the Week accolades on March 3 after Burke-Lee Mabeus was the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 24. Starting pitcher Collin Clarke claimed the league's weekly honor on March 17, before Mason Neville and Grinsell swept the league's player and pitcher awards on April 21. Cooney's first honor came on May 5.
