Split Squad at OSU HP, Desert Heat Meets
05/01/25 | Track and Field
Competition begins Friday with the High Performance in Corvallis, Ore.
EUGENE, Ore. – In the penultimate weekend of the regular season, the Oregon track and field team is sending entries to the two-day OSU High Performance in Corvallis, Ore., and the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz. The High Performance meet begins Friday and will primarily feature members of the UO distance crew.
The Desert Heat Classic will play out Saturday for the team's sprinters, jumpers and throwers.
The Ducks carry a combined 15 top-20 national marks into the weekend including six positioned inside the top 10. Diana Cherotich, currently ranked third in the NCAA at 10,000 meters, will tackle the 5,000 meters Friday evening in Corvallis. The invitational section of the event is scheduled for 8:47 p.m. Kyle Gibbs, tied for sixth nationally in the pole vault, is entered in his signature event in Arizona.
Cherotich broke the 10K school record in her first outing as a Duck, crossing the line in 31:45.22 at the Stanford Invitational in early April. She became the first UO woman to dip below 32 minutes. Gibbs, at the Battle at the Beach that same weekend, cleared 5.51m/18-1 for a new lifetime best and to become the eighth man in program history to clear 18 feet, and the first to do so since 2017.
Field entries at the Desert Heat Classic also feature Safin Wills in the men's triple jump, Ryann Porter in the women's triple jump, Kobe Lawrence in the men's shot put and Aidan Elbettar in the men's discus. All four enter the meet ranked among the top 20 nationally in their respective event.
The Ducks return to Hayward Field next Friday, May 9, to close out the regular season with the Oregon Twilight. Oregon will also host the Big Ten Championships (May 16-18) and NCAA Championships (June 11-14) on its home track. Tickets for the Twilight and both postseason meets are currently on sale.
