Cherotich, Thorsett Get Wins in Corvallis
05/03/25 | Track and Field
Ella Thorsett led a 1-2 Oregon finish in the 1500 meters.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon track and field team ran its way to a pair of victories Friday at the OSU High Performance meet in Corvallis, Ore. Diana Cherotich recorded a top-10 national mark over 5,000 meters and Ella Thorsett registered a personal best to win the open 1500.
Competition continues Saturday with the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz., and day two of the High Performance meet. Members of the Ducks' sprints, jumps and throws groups are in Arizona.
In her second race as a Duck, Cherotich broke away from the field early on her way to a winning time of 15:23.42 in the invitational section of the 5,000 meters. That time puts her fourth on the program's all-time list and based on marks entering the weekend, is currently ranked eighth in the nation in the event.
Cherotich opened her season April 4 with a school record over 10,000 meters (31:45.22) in Stanford and holds the third-fastest time in the NCAA this year.
Thorsett and Allura Markow turned in lifetime-best performances to finish 1-2, respectively, in the open 1500 meters. Thorsett stopped the clock in 4:21.46 for the win, taking more than seven seconds off her previous best of 4:28.58 from last year's Oregon Preview. Markow started the day with a best of 4:32.00 from the Oregon Open (April 18) and lowered that by nearly 10 seconds with her 4:22.67 effort.
Evan Dorenkamp ran a season's best of 3:44.88 in a third-place outing in Friday's invitational section of the 1500 meters. He opened his outdoor campaign with a 3:50 effort at the Stanford Invitational (April 4) before clocking a then-SB of 3:46.44 two weeks later at the Oregon Open.
Notable: Markow pulled double duty Friday, serving as a pacer in the 5,000 meters … top-five finishes in the pole vault for Isabella Abrahams (third place–3.49m/11-5.25) and Joey Bonacci (fifth–4.50m/14-9).
