BANDON, Ore. – The Oregon men's golf team sits in sole possession of first place after the opening round of the Bandon Dunes Championship while three Ducks will enter Monday's second round in the top ten individually.
The Ducks shot a 7-over 291 for the opening round at Bandon Trails on Sunday and hold a five-stroke lead on Boise State after 18 holes. Oregon led the field in total birdies (16), par-3 scoring average (+2) and par-4 scoring average (+12).
Greyson Leach sits tied atop the leaderboard at 4 under while freshman Ramil Saelim carded an even-par 71 to tie for third individually. Only five players recorded rounds of par or better on Sunday as the field dealt with difficult conditions and high winds.
How It Happened
Leach teed off on No. 13, starting his day with six pars before carding his first birdie of the day on No. 1. After a bogey on the second hole, the senior tallied four more birdies in his next seven holes before ending the round with three more pars. He entered the clubhouse in second, but a bogey on No. 5 by Utah Valley's Dane Huddleston moved Leach into a tie for the lead.
Saelim, making his debut in the lineup this week, birdied two of his first three holes and sat at 1-under through nine. He added a birdie on No. 3, but bogeys on No. 9 and 11 pushed him back to even par, which set a new season low.
Fellow freshman Tim Chang shot a 2-over 73 competing as an individual, playing his last four holes 1 under to jump into a tie for 8th.
Aiden Krafft got out to a slow start, carding a pair of double bogeys in his first seven holes and sat at 4-over at through nine. The junior found his swing and played the last nine holes even, birdieing No. 3 and No. 9 to sit in a tie for 21st. Similarly, Jay Gould-Healy sat at 8 over through five holes, but he carded four birdies and three bogeys in his final 13 to round out the Ducks' counting scores with a 7-over 78.
Quotable
"Difficult conditions today, the wind was strong, so I'm happy that we are leading," head coach Casey Martin said. "We've got a lot of room to improve tomorrow as well."
