Shields Selected as Freshman of the Week
03/11/25 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. – Goalkeeper Kate Shields has been named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
This marks the first career weekly honor for the freshman. Shields is the second member of the Oregon lacrosse team to earn a weekly award from the Big Ten this season after Anna Simmons was named midfielder of the week each of the first three weeks of the campaign.
Shields was the driving force in the Ducks' come-from-behind win over San Diego State last week. The freshman subbed in with Oregon down 6-0 and spurred the comeback, making 11 saves on 25 shots and picking up four ground balls en route to her first collegiate win.
Shields' 11 saves for the game were the most by any UO goalkeeper this season and she was especially effective on free position shots, holding the Aztecs to 2-12 for the game and 0-7 in the second half. The Barrington, R.I., native shined brightest with the game on the line, making a pair of stops in the final 30 seconds to keep the Ducks up by one, 17-16, and improve to 5-0 at home so far this season.
The Ducks return to Papé Field and will look to stay unbeaten on home turf on Wednesday when they face No. 20 Ohio State at 5 p.m. (Big Ten Network).
