02/06/25 | Men's Golf
KOHALA COAST, Hawaii – Eric Doyle sits in second place through 18 holes at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate after matching his career-best score with a 9-under par 63. Doyle turned in a flawless scorecard on Thursday at Mauna Lani, tallying seven birdies and an eagle as he tied for the second-lowest round to par in program history and the fifth-lowest round by a Duck.
As a team, Oregon opened the tournament by shooting a 20-under par 268, the second-lowest round to par in school history and ties for the seventh-lowest round by a UO team. All four of Oregon's counting scores were in the red.
The Ducks sit in tie for third place with North Carolina heading into Friday's second round, six strokes behind Oklahoma State. Arizona State is in second place at 24-under, while Pacific and Pepperdine are tied for fifth at 17-under. Doyle sits one stroke behind Oklahoma State's Preston Stout atop the leaderboard and one stroke ahead of Oklahoma State's Ethan Fong and Arizona State's Michael Mjaaseth.
How It Happened
Doyle sat at 1-under through eight holes after starting his round on No. 11, but he really got his round going when he made it back to the tee box on No. 1. Doyle birdied the par-4 first hole, starting a stretch of eight holes made up of six birdies and two pars. After a par on No. 9, Doyle carded the first eagle of the day for the Ducks to secure his spot in the Oregon record book. His 9-under 63 tied for the fifth-lowest round in program history and the second-lowest round to par while also matching his career-low, which he set during his freshman season.
Greyson Leach also turned in a flawless scorecard for the Ducks, finishing with a 6-under 66. The senior recorded four birdies before also carding an eagle, the 14th of his UO career, on the par-5 10th. Leach sits in a tie for ninth heading into the second round, and his 66 marks a new season-best score.
Aiden Krafft added the third sub-70 round of the day for the Oregon lineup with a 4-under 68, his second-lowest round of the season. Krafft sat at even par through nine holes, birdieing No. 13 and bogeying No. 16 after starting the round on No. 10, before tallying birdies on four of his next six holes and finishing his round with three consecutive pars.
Krafft sat at even par after 12 holes thanks to three birdies, three bogeys and six pars, but he finished the first round strong with three birdies in his final five holes to card a 3-under 69. He tallied five more birdies in the second round, finishing even par thanks to three bogeys and a double. Krafft sits in a tie for ninth heading into Tuesday and will look to claim his second top-10 finish of the fall.
Freshmen Tim Chang and Shams Jahangir-Arshad both made their debut in the Oregon lineup, finishing at 1-under par and 1-over par, respectively. Chang took some time getting going, bogeying four of his first eight holes, but immediately responded with five birdies over his next six holes. After a bogey and a par, Chang ended his round with back-to-back birdies. Jahangir-Arshad paired 11 pars with three birdies and four bogeys. Competing as an individual, Ramil Saelim finished with a 5-over 77 in his collegiate debut.
Quotable
"We had a great day today and a great finish," head coach Casey Martin said. "Eric, Greyson and Aiden played beautifully. The freshmen struggled a bit but got it going at the end. We just have to keep doing this every day to compete with this field."
