Depth, Speed Key Ducks’ 2-0 Start

Ducks' bench scores 47 points in 90-47 win over Montana.
EUGENE, Ore. — Using a nearly identical formula it did in its season opener, the Oregon women's basketball team utilized its bench and a high-paced style to run away from Montana Saturday in a 90-47 victory at Matthew Knight Arena.
Five Ducks scored in double figures for the second straight game, as Oregon (2-0) got 47 points from its bench. Ehis Etute came off the bench to pace UO with 12 points and seven rebounds, while guard Avary Cain added a career-best 11 points off the bench.
"Our two biggest strengths are depth and pace of play, and they kind of go hand-in-hand," UO head coach Kelly Graves said. "(Montana) got tired in that second quarter, they don't have the same kind of depth we do and that really showed up in the second quarter and continued the rest of the game."
Leading by 13 points after the first quarter, Oregon finished the opening half on a 12-0 run to take a 44-18 lead into halftime. The run included five points from Mia Jacobs and was capped by a Sofia Bell 3-pointer. Bell finished the day with 10 points while Jacobs contributed seven.
"We're able to keep the tempo up and it wears the other team down. In the third and fourth quarter, we're still fresh and still able to go full speed," Bell said. "I think that's a huge advantage and something we talk about every day in practice."
"We have great depth and we can trust that anyone from the bench can score and help us win the game at the end of the day," added Etute.

Oregon shot 52 percent from the field and racked up 19 assists on 35 made buckets. Meanwhile, the Ducks' defense was active yet again in forcing 32 Montana turnovers behind 16 steals. Guard Astera Tuhina grabbed a career-high five steals and added three assists.
How It Happened: The Ducks scored the first six points over the game's first three minutes, as the Grizzlies missed their first five shot attempts. After a pair of Montana 3-pointers, UO went on a seven-point run to stretch to the lead to nine, 15-6, before scoring the final six points of the quarter to take a 21-10 lead.
Eight players got into the scoring column in the first, led by six points from Elisa Mevius. Jacobs and Amina Muhammad each grabbed three boards, helping Oregon to an 11-7 rebounding edge in the first. Oregon shot 53 percent from the field while holding UM to 29 percent.
Neither team was able to put together more than a five-point run in the second quarter, until the Ducks scored 12 straight points to close the half over the final three and a half minutes. The spurt, which featured five points from Jacobs, created a 26-point halftime lead for the Ducks, 44-18.

The Griz connected on just 2-of-13 shots from downtown while Oregon went 4-of-7 from range in the first half. UO also owned a 15-0 edge in bench points to go with a 22-10 rebounding advantage.
Etute and Tuhina led the offense with six points each in the third quarter to propel the Ducks to a 64-32 lead after the third. Etute accounted for six of her team's final eight points in the frame.
Cain kept Oregon rolling with five straight points to open the fourth quarter, including her first of two 3-pointers. Cain would record nine of her 11 points in the fourth, going 3-of-3 from the field. UO shot 59 percent while holding Montana to 33 percent over the final 10 minutes.
In the second half, Oregon's bench outscored Montana's 32-5, while the Ducks defense produced 10 steals and 17 points off turnovers.
Up Next: The Ducks continue their homestand on Tuesday against Grand Canyon (6 p.m., B1G+).
