One-Two Punch Knocks Out Antelopes

Mia Jacobs and Katie Fiso combined for 46 points Tuesday as the Oregon women improved to 3-0 this season.
EUGENE, Ore. — One was already a proven impact player at the college level, the other was expected to blossom into that role this season, and both looked every bit that part Tuesday night.
Mia Jacobs, an all-conference forward last season before transferring to Oregon, and Katie Fiso, a former five-star recruit stepping into a starting guard role this season, combined for 46 points on Tuesday night to lead the Ducks to an 84-66 victory over Grand Canyon at Matthew Knight Arena.
The UO women (3-0) exploded out of the gates with a 28-9 edge in the first quarter. Fiso started particularly well, leading the Ducks with seven points — of Oregon's 11 field goals in the period, she scored three and assisted on five others. That helped the Ducks build enough of a lead to survive being outscored over the final three quarters, 57-56.
"A win is a win," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "It wasn't our finest effort in terms of effort, and I thought at times we let up. But what a great start. First quarter, we were on point."

The Ducks were playing for the first time without senior guard Elisa Mevius, who will miss the season with a knee injury suffered last week. Her absence might have been felt in particular on the defensive end late in the game, when Grand Canyon shot 71.4 percent in the fourth quarter after shooting 33.3 percent over the first three periods.
"It's unfortunate that this happened, mainly just for her but obviously it hurts us as well," Graves said. "But I'm really confident somebody's going to step up into that role. And right now, it may not be one person, but everybody's just got to give a little bit more."
Ari Long replaced Mevius in the starting lineup Tuesday and scored seven points. Sofia Bell provided a lift defensively with three of Oregon's 12 steals, and Astera Tuhina provided scoring off the bench with 11 points.
"Like KG always says, when somebody goes down, it's like a human instinct to kind of step up," Fiso said. "And I feel like Ari did a really good job of that, on both the offensive and defensive end. So, shout out to Ari."
How It Happened: The Ducks raced out to a 10-2 lead in the opening couple of minutes. Sarah Rambus scored twice and both Bell and Long hit three-pointers, with all four baskets assisted by Fiso. She later hit three shots of her own, one of them an and-one, and assisted on yet another three-pointer, by Tuhina.

"I feel like everyone on the Oregon team was in the right spots for me to find them," Fiso said. "They were spreading the floor hard, they were getting stops on defense, creating that offensive flow. They were ready, and I'm glad they hit the shots."
Jacobs got going in the second quarter, scoring eight points to help the Ducks take a 42-24 lead into halftime. She hit a three-pointer in the quarter, which has always been part of her game but perhaps could be more so with Mevius out — Jacobs slid down to play some small forward at times Tuesday, she said.Â
"Just (trying to) be able to be versatile with the ball, and also trying not to do too much, because that's not my biggest strong point," Jacobs said.Â

Fiso scored another nine points in the third, at the end of which Oregon led 59-37. Grand Canyon closed the gap in the fourth, outscoring the Ducks 29-25
"We've been pretty good with leads up until now, but I thought today we just kind of relaxed and never really kind of got back under control," Graves said. "But credit Grand Canyon, they fought and played hard."
