SPOKANE, Wash. – The Oregon women's tennis team picked up four more singles victories to go with a pair of doubles wins on Saturday on the second day of the Gonzaga Invitational at Stevens Center.
Freshman Hinata Furutani and sophomore Bridget Mihulka each won their first singles matches of the day to advance to the semifinal round in the Blue Bracket and later in the evening, both fell in third-set tiebreakers.
Furutani began the day with her second straight-set victory of the tournament over Gonzaga's Sveva Zerpelloni, 6-2, 7-6 (1), in the quarterfinals. Mihulka was also victorious in straight sets in the quarterfinals, defeating Zali Morris of Washington State, 6-4, 6-4.
Furutani stands at 6-3 during her first collegiate fall season while Mihulka now owns a 5-3 singles record this fall.
Both Patsy Daughters and Olivia Symons moved on the consolation semifinals of their Red Bracket, with Daughters easing by Nadine Arbaizar Martinez of Portland, 6-0, 6-1, while Symons gutted out a three-set victory over Portland State's Hana Abdelhamid, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-2.
After dropping a tight doubles match Friday, Daughters and Mihulka claimed back-to-back victories on Saturday to move through to Sunday's consolation final of the Gold Bracket. Daughters and Mihulka started the day with a 6-3 win over their opponents from Washington State before then earning a 6-4 win over Seattle U.
After two Friday wins advanced them to the semifinal of the Gold Bracket, the team of Furutani and Symons fell in a tiebreaker that went extra points, with Portland's Maria Galatescu and Alia Rubio Perez winning 7-6 (9-7). Furutani and Symons are now 5-2 when paired together this fall.
