Ducks Collect Nine Wins Saturday in Nebraska
01/18/25 | Track and Field
Oregon finishes the weekend with 14 wins at the Graduate Classic.
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Oregon track and field team secured another nine wins Saturday to close out the Graduate Classic at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. The Ducks also got a school-record performance from redshirt freshman Kobe Lawrence in the shot put.
Lawrence, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, got the shot put out to a day's best of 18.93m/62-1.25 in the fourth round. The previous record of 17.97m/58-11.5 was set by former standout Ryan Hunter-Sims in 2016. All four of Lawrence's legal marks Saturday were beyond the old school mark. He was the event runner-up behind Nebraska's Maxwell Otterdahl.
In another top-10 program showing, Ryann Porter won the triple jump while recording a lifetime-best 13.36m/43-10 on her final attempt of the day. She became the fourth UO woman in program history with a mark over 43 feet indoors. Porter entered the day with an indoor best of 13.01m/42-8.25 from last year's UW Last Chance meet.
Jadyn Mays, having already posted the fastest qualifying time in the 60 meters, posted the Ducks' first win of the day with her effort in the 300 meters. She stopped the clock in 37.24 and led a UO sweep of the top-five spots. Mays ran 7.30 in the morning prelims of the 60 but did not line up for the final.
The Ducks' sprint crew added three other individual titles Saturday with PJ Ize-Iyamu in the 60 meters, Aaliyah McCormick in the 60-meter hurdles and freshman Amirah Shaheed in the 200. Ize-Iyamu ran a winning time of 6.70, just out-leaning Korey Mosley of Highland CC (6.71). McCormick won her season opener in 8.22 while Shaheed's time of 24.56 out of heat 11 stood up through the 12th and final timed section.
A pair of Canadian Ducks swept the men's and women's 600 meters with Matthew Erickson and Ella Clayton, respectively. Erickson, running out of heat four of six, established the time to beat at 1:17.38 and saw that time be more than fast enough for the win, besting the field by more than two seconds. Erickson also won the 1,000 meters Friday afternoon.
Clayton was a double winner Saturday, clocking a winning time of 1:30.36 in the 600 and teaming up with Katriina Wright, Shaniya Hall and Annaleise Taylor for a victory (3:40.88) in the 4x400 relay. Hall, Wright and Taylor had finished second, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 300 meters earlier in the program.
Simeon Birnbaum, a runner-up in the 1,000 meters on day one, joined the winners' circle with a first-place outing in Saturday's 800 meters. He finished with a time of 1:49.27, ahead of the 1:49.98 from Nebraska freshman Pradeep Senthilkumar. They were the only two runners under 1:50 in the race.
Next Meet: Razorback Invitational (Jan. 31-Feb. 1) in Fayetteville, Ark.
At the end of the regular season, the top 16 declared athletes in each event and top 12 relays advance to the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships (March 14-15) in Virginia Beach.
