09/14/25 | Cross Country, Track and Field
Ducks advance in the men’s and women’s 1500 meters and 100-meter hurdles.
EUGENE, Ore. – Jorinde van Klinken won a silver medal Sunday at the World Championships, becoming the first-ever Dutch woman to win a World medal in the discus. She finished with a season-best toss of 67.50m/221-5, a measure on her first attempt of the competition.
Van Klinken, the 2023 NCAA discus champion while at Oregon, had finished fourth in the previous two World Championships in Eugene in 2022 and Budapest in 2023. She will join Valerie Allman of the U.S. (gold) and Silinda Moralas of Cuba (bronze) on the podium.
Van Klinken is also entered in the shot put with former UO teammate Jaida Ross. That event begins on day eight (Saturday, 6 p.m. PT) with qualification followed by the final later in the day.
Reigning Olympic champion—and three-time NCAA champion while at Oregon—Cole Hocker won heat three of the 1500 meters opening round to automatically advance to the semifinals. He crossed the line in 3:41.88 during Sunday's morning session in Tokyo. Hocker is one of three American men to move on, along with U.S. champion Jonah Koech and Ethan Strand.
The men's 1500 semifinals are scheduled for Monday at 5:30 a.m. PT, streaming on Peacock.
On the women's side of the event, the 1500 final will feature two Oregon alum Jessica Hull and Klaudia Kazimierska. Both earned their spots in the final with top-six finishes in the second of two heats. Nikki Hiltz, who competed at Oregon before completing their collegiate career at Arkansas, also advanced to the final.
The women's 1500 final is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:05 a.m. PT, also on Peacock. Hull won silver last summer at the Olympics in Paris.
In other first-round qualifying, Alaysha Johnson was second in her heat and 12th overall to secure a lane in the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles. She clocked a time of 12.76 to earn a big 'Q' and will line up in heat two of three in the next round (Monday, 5:06 a.m. PT). The final of the 100 hurdles will also run Monday, approximately 75 minutes after the semifinals.
Jillian Weir, in her fourth World Championships appearance, was 13th in Group A of hammer qualifying and finished 26th overall. She had a day's best of 67.98m/223-0 on her first attempt of the day but did not qualify for the final.
