Ducks Drop Series at OSU in Another Tight Game
04/27/24 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. — No. 18 Oregon got another gutty pitching performance while scoring in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game, but No. 13 Oregon State answered with a two-run inning to pick up a 4-2 win at Goss Stadium on Saturday night in Pac-12 Conference action.
Grayson Grinsell allowed just one run through six innings before giving up a leadoff double in the seventh forcing Oregon to turn to its bullpen. The Ducks got within one pitch of getting out of the inning but Oregon State's Jabin Trosky squibbed a slow roller toward shortstop that Maddox Molony couldn't cleanly field bare handed allowing the go-ahead run to score.
Oregon got the run right back. Mason Neville led off the eighth with a triple off the left-field wall and then scored on a Smith sacrifice fly.
OSU retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on a two out that scored two before Oregon sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth but couldn't score.
How It Happened: Oregon State jumped on top for the second straight game in the second inning. After putting a pair on with a leadoff walk and then a hit-by pitch, Canon Reeder delivered a two-out RBI single for a 1-0 lead.
Oregon put its first run of the series on the board to tie the game in the third. Drew Smith gave Oregon just its second hit of the series but it was a big one, a solo homer over the center-field wall.
Pitching dominated the early portions of the game. After giving up the RBI single in the second, Grinsell retired 12 of the next 15 batters before allowing the leadoff double in the seventh.
Oregon State's Jacob Kmatz was dominant as well striking out 10 batters in 6.1 innings of work allowing just two hits.
Box Score Notes: Oregon State clinched the series with the win … Smith's home run was his second of the season and his first since Feb. 23 … Logan Mercado (0-1) took the loss for the Ducks after giving up two runs on two his with a walk and a strikeout in an inning of work.
On Deck: The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday with a 2:05 p.m. first pitch.
