Senior Day Ends in Smiles for Ducks
03/31/24 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – In its home finale on a sunny Senior Day at the Student Tennis Center, the Oregon women's tennis team sent seniors Nina Geissler and Uxia Martinez Moral home winners Sunday afternoon, as the 66th-ranked Ducks halted Washington State's comeback bid with a 4-3 victory.
"Any win that you can get in the Pac-12 is a good one, but to get one at home on Senior Day outdoors in the beautiful sunshine is even more special," said UO head coach Courtney Nagle. "To send our seniors off on a good note, is always a good feeling for everyone."
In a back-and-forth affair, the team score sat at 3-3 with the final match in a third-set tiebreaker. After dropping the first set, junior Karin Young battled back to win the second set and even trailed 5-6 in the third set before pulling off a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory for the Ducks' first Pac-12 win of the season.
"The match itself came down to the last match with Karin Young, which she's been nails in that position for us many, many times. It was great to see her come through yet again," Nagle said.
Oregon needed a comeback from its top doubles duo of Jo-Yee Chan and Sophie Luescher to help claim the doubles point. Chan and Luescher trailed 3-0 in their match, before storming back for a 6-4 point-clinching victory.
Geissler and Young also won their doubles match on court three, 6-4, picking up their first win of the spring when paired together.

After the Cougars evened the score with a win on court three, Martinez Moral put the Ducks back in front with her 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Fifa Kumhom. The win was Martinez Moral's 73rd career singles victory, which places her alone in sixth place in program history.
WSU tied the score again, 2-2, with a victory at No. 2. Freshman Candela Aparisi overcame a first-set setback in earn matchup with Martina Markov on court six to earn a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, to put the Ducks back in front, 3-2. It was her fifth straight singles win while she is a team-best 4-1 in conference play.
"As for the seniors, Uxia has been with us for a long time. She's been a part of a lot of firsts and seconds with our program and has really left this place better than when she found it and created a lot of amazing moments along the way," added Nagle of her senior class. "We're really going her and Nina. Nina's only been with us for one year but the impact that both of them have made on our program is significant.
"We're looking forward to the next matches and continuing to finish strong, but I know that both of those young women are going to on and do great things in this world. I am proud of the way they competed today and the way they show up on a daily basis."

The Ducks will finish the regular season in the state of California over the next three weeks, beginning with a trip to the Bay Area schools next weekend. UO will meet California on Friday before taking on Stanford Sunday.
