Oregon Loses Tight Battle to UW
03/29/24 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 66 Oregon women's tennis team managed to get two singles wins off No. 28 Washington Friday afternoon, but the Huskies held off the Ducks for a 4-2 victory at the Student Tennis Center.
Freshman Candela Aparisi and junior Karin Young each won their respective matches in straight sets, with Aparisi winning 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 and Young earning a 6-3, 6-1 win on court five. Aparisi's win evened the score at 1-1 while Young's victory against tied the score at two apiece.
For Aparisi, it marked her fourth straight victory and fifth over her last six completed matches. Young pushed her singles win total to 10, moving into a second-place tie on the team with Uxia Martinez Moral.
Facing a doubles lineup that featured two top-60 pairings, the Ducks dropped the doubles point for the seventh time this season – with five times coming in conference play. The Huskies' top duo of Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen, ranked 57th in the nation, defeated UO's Jo-Yee Chan and Sophie Luescher 6-2.
On court two, Aparisi and Martinez Moral dropped a 6-2 decision and Nina Geissler and Young led the country's No. 54 doubles team of Catherine Gagnon and Melissa Sakar 4-3 on court three when the point was decided. It was the first time this spring season that both Duck doubles teams were paired together.
Washington would go on to win the final two singles matches to stave off the Ducks' comeback bid. All eight of Oregon's losses this season have come against teams currently ranked in the ITA's top-75 poll.
The Ducks will hold Senior Day on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Washington State, honoring seniors Nina Geissler and Uxia Martinez Moral prior to the match.
