EUGENE, Ore. – After six straight matches away from home, the Oregon women's tennis team was triumphant in its return to the Student Tennis Center, defeating in-state rival Portland 6-1 on Saturday.
After splitting the top two doubles matches, the doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court three. Candela Aparisi and Karin Young were able to fend off UP's Rimona Rouf and Alaia Rubio Perez for a 7-6 (5) victory. The Ducks (9-5) claimed the doubles point for the 10th time in 14 matches this season.
Playing at No. 2 doubles, Jo-Yee Chan and Sophie Luescher picked up a 6-2 win, while UO's top tandem of Tilde Jagare and Uxia Martinez Moral fell to the nation's 68th-ranked duo of Sally Pethybridge and Iva Zelic.
Chan extended Oregon's lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-0 win at third singles. The win was Chan's third straight and 10th of the spring. Young put the score at 3-0 with a straight-set victory on court five, improving her singles record to 9-3 this spring.
Aparisi was responsible for the decisive fourth point on court six. The freshman Spaniard won 6-2, 6-4 for the fifth singles win of her campaign.
The Ducks' lead swelled to 6-0 with Martinez Moral's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Luescher's three-set win at No. 1. Luescher, who won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set to Zelic 2-6, forcing a third-set 10-point tiebreak. Luescher rallied from a 5-7 deficit to tally five of the final six points for a 10-8 victory.
