Kyei’s Career Day Not Enough for Ducks
02/25/24 | Women's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. — Phillipina Kyei dropped a career-high 23 points to go with 15 rebounds, but Oregon suffered a 71-61 defeat at Washington State Sunday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum.
Kyei was joined in double figures by Grace VanSlooten (16) and Kennedy Basham (14), as the trio accounted for 53 points. Basham turned in her second career game in double figures after a career-high 15 Friday night.
"I give our players a lot of credit," UO head coach Kelly Graves said. "We did a lot of good things tonight, we outrebounded them, we limited our turnovers a little bit and had a better assist-to-turnover rate than we've typically had.
"I thought Grace was a warrior tonight, she played so well. And Philli just continues to really impress."
Kyei produced her conference-leading 19th double-double, which places her alone in seventh place in a single season in UO history.
Down by five at half, UO trimmed the Cougars' lead to one point in the third quarter and got as close as eight in the fourth. The Ducks outscored WSU 26-20 in the final quarter, but Washington State drained 6-of-10 3-pointers in the second half.
Overall, the Ducks (11-18, 2-14) shot 41 percent from the field, but finished 1-for-8 from the three. Washington State shot 56 percent in the second half and 47 percent overall and went 7-for-20 from deep.
Astera Tuhina scored a game-high 24 points and Eleonora Villa added 20 for the Cougars.
How It Happened: After the Ducks missed their first six shots in going 2-for-12 from the field in the first quarter. Kyei scored all eight UO points in the opening frame, going 2-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line while grabbing five rebounds. WSU made 5-of-14 shots while going 0-for-4 from the 3-point line and led 10-8.
Kyei's 10th point of the half tied the score at 14 midway through the second quarter. WSU responded by scoring the next 11 points to take a 25-14 lead with just under three minutes to play in the half. Oregon trimmed the deficit to five, 25-20, with a 6-0 run to close the half.
Basham registered four first-half points while the Ducks got three apiece from Chance Gray and VanSlooten. UO shot 28 percent in the half to the Cougars' 37 percent. WSU went 1-for-10 from the 3-point line and converted eight Oregon turnovers into 13 points.
The run extended to 10 unanswered as Oregon scored the first four points of the third quarter to crawl within a point at 25-24 less than two minutes into the half. A VanSlooten layup brought the Ducks within two, 30-28, but the Cougars then went on an 11-3 burst to push their lead to 10 at the media timeout.
The run grew to 14-3, opening a 13-point gap, as Washington State hit seven straight shots from the floor. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Villa put the score at 51-35 through three quarters.
UO began the fourth on a 10-2 run to claw within eight points, and the Ducks again were within single digits with 4:18 to play after Basham knocked down a pair of free throws. However, the Cougars did not allow the Ducks to get any closer and finished with a 10-point win.
UO shot 50 percent in the second half, but was 1-for-6 from the 3-point line while WSU went 6-for-10 from deep. The Ducks committed just one second-half turnover and owned a 22-14 lead in points in the paint. Kyei and VanSlooten led the way with 13 apiece in the second half with Basham adding 10.
Notable: Kyei registered her Pac-12-leading 19th double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds … Her 19 double-doubles put her along in seventh place on Oregon's single-season double-double list … Kyei turned in a career-high 23 points for her second career game with 20 or more … Basham produced her second straight double-digit scoring performance with 14 points, one shy of her career high set Friday at Washington.
