On his final attempt of the day, Jett Kinder unleashed a winning throw in the javelin.
EUGENE, Ore. – Jett Kinder posted a win in the javelin Friday and the UO track and field team combined for 10 personal and season bests on the penultimate day of the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invite in Southern California.
The Ducks return to action Saturday beginning with the men's hammer at 12 p.m. and elite sections of the 4x100-meter relays at 12:50 p.m. The final day of competition will also feature invitational heats of the 1500 meters at the Bryan Clay meet, scheduled for a 7:10 p.m. start.
Kinder got the day started with a victory and new lifetime best in the collegiate section of the javelin. On his final attempt of the day, he unleashed a throw of 68.27m/223-11 to move from second to first in the overall standings. Kinder added more than 20 feet to his previous best, a measure of 64.40m/211-3 from the SDSU Aztec Invitational two weeks ago.
The Brentwood, Tenn., native improved each round Friday, including marks of 61.10m/200-5 in the third round to advance to the final and a fifth-attempt measure of 64.28m/210-10 to move into second place.
The Ducks nearly capped their day at Hilmer Lodge Stadium with a second victory, this one by Jaida Ross in the collegiate shot put. Sitting in fourth place, Ross saved her best effort of the day for the sixth round and got the implement out to 55.72m/182-9 for a short-lived lead. Kaia Harris of Missouri, leader for the majority of the competition, used a toss of 56.23m/184-5 to re-take the top spot on the final attempt of the day.
Freshman PJ Ize-Iyamu Jr. advanced to the final of the collegiate 100 meters with the fourth-fastest time overall (10.50) in the prelims. The time doubled as the fourth fastest overall in the opening heats. Out of lane nine in the final, Ize-Iyamu clocked a time of 10.54 to finish fifth.
Teammates Ryan Mulholland, Xavier Nairne and Micah Williams are scheduled to run in the elite section of the 100 meters Saturday afternoon.
In the women's collegiate 400 meters, Shaniya Hall posted a personal best of 53.25 for a top-10 finish in the eight-section timed final. She had a previous outdoor best of 54.38 from last season, and earlier this indoor season, the Glen Burnie, Md., native established a then-PB of 53.30 at the Don Kirby Invitational.
