Hickey, van Klinken Get Wins at Mt. SAC Relays
04/16/23 | Track and Field
The Ducks collected two wins, four top-10 program performances and 11 combined personal and season bests Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. – On the final day of competition at the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational, the Oregon track and field team collected two wins, four top-10 program performances and 11 combined personal and season bests. Alysah Hickey and Jorinde van Klinken claimed victory in the long jump and discus, respectively.
Making her season debut in the event, Hickey registered a winning mark of 6.71m/22-0.25 and moved from fourth to third on the program's all-time list. She becomes the third UO woman with a wind-legal measure beyond 22 feet, joining Jasmine Todd and Jenna Prandini on that short list. Hickey also moves to third on the NCAA list this season based on marks entering the day.
The Women of Oregon were well presented in the competition with past UO standouts Todd and Rhesa Foster finishing in second and third, respectively.
The Ducks got their second win of the day from van Klinken in the discus. The two-time NCAA champion posted a day's best of 64.45m/211-5 and bested an elite field that included fellow Oregon22 competitor Laulauga Tausaga-Collins. Van Klinken added two more 64-meter throws to her storied career docket.
Shelby Moran added a top-10 program mark in the hammer Saturday afternoon. With a season best of 66.13m/216-11, she became the No. 3 performer in program history. Moran finished in eighth overall but fourth among collegians in the field. Four of Moran's five legal marks traveled farther than her old season best.
In the first result of the day, the UO women finished third overall and second among collegians in the 4x100-meter relay. Aaliyah McCormick, Jadyn Mays, Shaniya Hall and Ella Clayton registered a season-best time of 43.72 to secure the top-three finish. The Ducks finished ahead of a pair of all-star groups from Cote d'Ivoire and Canada.
McCormick added an individual third-place effort in the 100-meter hurdles while moving from sixth to third on the program's all-time list. She stopped the clock in 13.03 to win the first of two sections, and established a new personal best in the event.
Also returning to the track after relay duties, Mays recorded an all-conditions best of 11.09 to finish in third place in the 100 meters. The wind was just over the allowable reading at 2.2 during the race. She began the season with an 11.19 at the SDSU Aztec Invitational (March 25) and previously owned an all-conditions best of 11.12 from last year's NCAA West Preliminary.
Mays was back on the track for a fifth-place finish (22.88) in the 200 meters.
In the elite section of the triple jump, Lexi Ellis used a fifth-round effort of 13.60m/44-7.5 to move from fourth to second place. The measure also improved on her outdoor best, adding three centimeters to a mark of 13.57m/44-6.25 established at last year's Mt. SAC Relays. Ellis strengthens her position at No. 3 on the program's top-10 list.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, and in her first race since the NCAA Indoor meet, Klaudia Kazimierska ran 4:11.15 over 1500 meters to become the seventh-fastest performer in UO history. She was fifth overall and fourth among collegians. Earlier this season, teammate Izzy Thornton-Bott moved to No. 5 on that UO top-10 list with a run of 4:08.64 at the Australian Championships at the end of March.
In the men's 1500 meters, Luke Affolder (3:49.52) and Alex Slenning (3:49.64) each posted season bests. Slenning was just .06 off his lifetime best, a mark he set back in 2018. Giuliano Scasso ran to a new PB in Saturday night's heats with this 3:52.27 outing.
Notable: Mason Strunk posted a season-best mark of 64.42m/211-4 in the men's hammer; finished in ninth place…Xavier Nairne (10.43) and Ryan Mulholland (10.58) dropped time to record season bests in the elite heats of the 100 meters…Jaida Ross finished fifth, and third among collegians, with a throw of 17.74m58-2.5 in the shot put…Clayton, Shaniya Hall, Katriina Wright and Jordyn Blake combined to run 3:33.74 in the 4x400-meter relay…in first full race since the Pac-12 Cross Country meet in late October, Emilie Girard run 4:17.64 in the 1500 meters, just .01 off her lifetime best…Benjamin Reynolds was part of a fall involving several runners in the final heat of the open 1500 meters in Azusa but got up to finish.
