Ducks Drop Overtime Thriller
04/01/23 | Women's Lacrosse
EUGENE, Ore. — The Oregon women's lacrosse team erased an early deficit and took a late lead with a stellar fourth quarter on Saturday against Colorado but ultimately suffered a 15-14 loss in overtime at Pape Field.
The Ducks (3-7, 0-5 Pac-12) trailed 12-9 going into the final quarter before scoring five unanswered goals to take a 14-12 lead with 6:22 remaining. But Colorado (5-5, 4-1 Pac-12) scored with 2:30 left to get within one and again at the 1:16 mark to knot the game at 14. Neither team scored in the final minute to force a golden goal overtime period, which saw the Buffaloes score in just over a minute to come away with the win.
"Tonight was a hard-fought game by both teams," Chelsea Hoffmann said following the conclusion of Saturday evening's game. There were some great performances by our offense, with 50% goals assisted on and eight total contributors. I'm happy with the adjustments we made on the draw as a team." Looking forward, Hoffmann made it clear that there is "lots to keep building on this season."
How it Happened: After a scoreless first five minutes, Gabby Cleveland gave Oregon a 1-0 lead with her 20th goal of the season. The Buffaloes dominated the rest of the opening period, with leading scorer Charlie Rudy fueling a 5-0 Colorado run with a trio of goals.
Cleveland made it 5-2 with her second goal early in the second period, scoring on a free position shot. Rudy responded with her fourth of the day for CU, but Cleveland once again found the back of the net on a free position to notch her fourth hat trick of the season.
Back-to-back goals by Sam McGee extended Colorado's lead to 8-3 with 2:38 left in the opening half. Lauren Rismani scored her fifth goal of the season at the 1:38 mark and then assisted on Cleveland's fourth goal to make it 8-5 with 58 seconds left. A foul hurt the Ducks in the final seconds, as Rudy scored her fifth goal on a free position to send the Buffaloes into the break with a 9-5 advantage.
McGee's fourth goal of the day pushed Colorado's lead to 10-5 early in the third quarter. Still, the Ducks quickly responded with back-to-back goals by Morgan McCarthy and Lauren Rismani to cut the lead to three and force a CU timeout. The Ducks got within two on a goal from Maydysn Sweeney five minutes later and pushed the Buffs' scoreless drought to nearly nine minutes before a goal by Morgan Pence ended the run. Alyssa Wright answered for the Ducks with 30 seconds left, but a last-second CU goal made it a 12-9 Buffaloes lead entering the fourth.
The Ducks dominated most of the fourth quarter, with a trio of goals from Sweeney, Katie Collins and Haley Cummins in less than two minutes to tie the game, 12-12. Sweeney's first career hat trick gave Oregon its first lead since the opening quarter, and Cleveland tallied her fifth goal with 6:22 left to give the Ducks a 14-12 lead before Colorado mounted its late comeback.
Who Stood Out: Cleveland is now Oregon's leading goal-scorer with 24 after finding the back of the net five times, her second game with five or more goals in the last four contests. Sweeney scored three goals on just four shots, and Rismani recorded her second multi-goal game of the season while adding her team-leading 14th assist. Bailey Smith and Haley Cummins each dished out multiple assists for the first time this season, and Anna Simmons grabbed a career-high six draw controls.
Notable: Oregon won the draw control battle for just the second time this season, finishing with a season-high 20 to just 13 for Colorado … Cleveland's five goals came on just six shots, and she also grabbed three draws … Paige Crowther had her third career game with 10-plus saves and second this season … Oregon went to overtime for the first time since April 14, 2022, vs. Arizona State.
Up Next: The Ducks will be at back home next Saturday, April 8, to take on UC Davis at 1 p.m.
