Ducks Remain Perfect at Home
02/17/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon women's tennis team pushed its winning streak to four straight and remained perfect at home with a 6-1 win over Boise State Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks (6-2) moved their home record to 6-0 after claiming their sixth doubles point of the season to go with five singles victories. The win snapped the Broncos' (5-3) two-match winning streak and improved UO's record in the all-time series to 10-3.
"I think it was great to get the doubles point. We either won it or were in it at every position, which is good," said head coach Courtney Nagle. "In singles, I thought on some courts we had a little bit of a slow start. We were down on a handful of courts and some of those courts rebounded and got back into really good position.
"I think at this point of the season, every team we are playing is going to be challenging and everyone is going to push us and bring their best. I think to have that is good, we are going to have to do that every day and it makes us better."
Oregon clinched the doubles point for the fourth straight match and sixth time this season, getting victories from its No. 1 and No. 2 pairs. Ares Teixido Garcia and Jo-Yee Chan remained undefeated (6-0) with a 6-2 win on court two over Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo.
On court one, Sophie Luescher and Uxia Martinez Moral sealed the point with a 6-2 victory over Joana Baptista and Holly Stewart. Luescher and Martinez Moral won their fourth straight doubles match and improved their spring record to 5-2.
The Ducks quickly grabbed two singles points behind straight-set wins by Misaki Kobayashi and Teixido Garcia. Kobayashi got past Shauna Heffernan, 6-3, 6-1, for her second singles win of the season. Teixido Garcia clinched her fourth straight singles win and improved to 6-2 with her 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 2 position over Marruffo.
Chan walked away with a 6-4, 7-6 (1) over Discenza for her fourth straight singles win. Chan, a freshman, improved to 5-1 in her first collegiate campaign.
Finally, Karin Young overcame a first-set loss and forced her match with Stewart to a third set after she won set two in a tiebreaker. Young took the third set, 6-3, for UO's sixth point of the day.
"You can feel it as a spectator when the energy swings and when a few people start winning points and you hear the crowd cheer," Nagle added. "You can kind of see that momentum shift, and we had that shift in our direction as Ares (Teixido Garcia) won her first set and Uxia (Martinez Moral) and Misaki (Kobayashi) got rolling."
UO improved to 6-0 at home while picking up its fourth straight win of the homestand. The Ducks are now 10-3 against BSU and have won three consecutive against the Broncos.
The Ducks conclude their five-match homestand Saturday against Fresno State at 12 p.m. PT at the Student Tennis Center.
