Rally at Stanford Falls Short in Five Sets

STANFORD, Calif. — Facing a 0-2 match deficit, the No. 6 Oregon volleyball forced a fifth but the would-be rally came up just short in a five-set loss Thursday night at fourth-ranked Stanford. Morgan Lewis led all players with 19 kills, tying her career high, and Hannah Pukis led a trio of UO double-doubles with 48 assists and 11 digs.
Stanford won the match by a 25-15, 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 15-12 scoreline. With the setback, Oregon is now 21-5 this season with an 11-4 record in Pac-12 play.
Lewis was efficient from the right side, hitting .405 (19-4-37) against the Cardinal. She tied her previous best of 19 from the Ducks' five-set win at Pittsburgh in mid-September. Thursday was her ninth match with double-digit kills paired with a .300 or higher hitting percentage. Mimi Colyer and Gabby Gonzales finished with 14 and 10 kills, respectively.
With her 17th assist of the match, Pukis recorded the 5,000th assist of her career. She is one of just two active setters in the NCAA to eclipse the milestone, joining Savannah Vach of Miami (FL). Pukis, in her second season at Oregon, now has 2,154 assists as a Duck which is 10th on the program's career list.
Defensively, senior libero Georgia Murphy tied her season high with 18 digs Thursday. She was one of four Ducks in double figures along with Pukis, Colyer (13) and Gonzales (15). At the service line, fellow senior Elise Ferreira dialed up a season-high four aces including two in a late fifth-set push.
How It Happened: In the decisive frame, Stanford (21-3, 14-1) used an early four-point run to go ahead 6-3 and force a timeout by head coach Matt Ulmer. The Cardinal led 8-4 when the team switched side but after a kill by Colby Neal, Ferreira tallied back-to-back aces to pull Oregon back to within one point. It was Stanford's turn to call a timeout.
However, the home team never relinquished the lead. The Ducks appeared to be within one for a fourth time—down 11-10—but a successful Stanford challenge detected a net violation earlier in the rally that was initially ended by a Colyer kill. Stanford led 12-9 after the score was reversed.
Consecutive kills by Colyer saved two Stanford match points but on their third chance, the Cardinal got a kill off the UO block to clinch the win. Thursday night's result came in just the fourth five setter between the two teams played on Stanford's home floor.
After dropping the first two sets, the Ducks responded by winning four of the first five points in the third and taking a 10-4 lead on a Gonzales kill that forced Stanford into a timeout. The Cardinal rattled off five points to get within one but Oregon never gave up its lead, holding off Stanford who was within one on six other occasions in the set.
At 19-18, the Ducks used a quick 3-0 surge to create separation on the scoreboard. Lewis had two kills in the push. Kara McGhee gave Oregon a handful of set points with a solo block and two rallies later, Lewis put away her fifth kill of the set to extend the match.
The Ducks used a similar start in the fourth set, doubling up their opponents at 10-5 on a second-contact kill by Pukis. Oregon led by at least four for the rest of the set—up 19-15 and 20-16 at its closest. Colyer knocked down a kill for set point and after a kill by Stanford's Kendall Kipp, the Ducks guaranteed a fifth set thanks to a block from Gonzales and Neal.
Kipp and Caitie Baird each had 18 kills Thursday night for Stanford.
Notable: Pukis' milestone assist came on a back set to Lewis in the second set…Ferreira is the seventh Duck with at least 10 aces this season; up to 11 for the UO senior and 84 in her career.
Up Next: The Ducks' weekend in the Bay Area continues Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Cal. The team's next home match is Tuesday, Nov. 21, against USC which will also be Senior Day.
