No. 7 Ducks Beat Colorado in Four
11/05/23 | Women's Volleyball
Oregon (21-4, 11-3) had a season-high 12 aces in Sunday's home win.
EUGENE, Ore. — Behind a season-high 12 aces and a highly efficient offense, the No. 7 Oregon volleyball team posted a four-set win (25-7, 24-26, 25-20, 25-9) over Colorado Sunday at Matthew Knight Arena. In victory, the Ducks improved to 21-4 overall with a 11-3 tally in Pac-12 play.
Oregon finished the afternoon with 12 service aces, replacing its previous season high of 10 against UW (Sept. 29), also on its home floor. Five Ducks had at least one service winner including five off the hand of Mimi Colyer and three by freshman Kate Thibault. The Ducks had just five service errors in the victory.
Under the direction of Hannah Pukis and her 45 assists, the UO offense generated a .380 hitting figure, its 13th outing of the season with a .300 or higher efficiency. No player had more than two attack errors against Colorado. Colyer and Gabby Gonzales each put down 15 kills with just three errors between the two outside hitters.
Pukis led all players with 17 digs to complete a double-double. With a majority of the CU attack directed toward the right side of the Ducks' defense, libero Georgia Murphy stepped into second-contact duties and had eight assists of her own to go along with nine digs. Thibault established a new season high with 14 digs.
How It Happened: The Ducks sprinted out to a 10-3 advantage in the first set, forcing an early timeout by Colorado after a kill by Morgan Lewis. The lead reached double digits—16-6—on a Thibault ace, part of a nine-serve run by the Watertown, Minn., native. Karson Bacon put down a kill for set point and on the ensuing serve, Colyer ended the frame with an ace.
Lewis and Bacon finished the afternoon with 11 and nine kills, respectively. The two UO seniors also had four blocks each.
The Ducks led 21-17 in the second set but out of a timeout, Colorado (14-11, 6-8) won six of the next seven points to take a 23-22 lead. The home team steadied and had set point at 24-23 but the Buffs rattled off the final three points of the second to tie the match.
The second set featured 18 ties and nine lead changes.
In a similarly tight third set, neither team led by more than two until Oregon took a 23-20 lead after another kill by Lewis. Gonzales followed with a kill of her own to arrive at set point. After a Colorado timeout, Lewis and Kara McGhee teamed up for a block to clinch the set and take the 2-1 match lead.
Colyer had seven of her 15 kills in the third set, posting a .700 hitting percentage (7-0-10) in the frame. Gonzales was right behind with six kills on nine swings, and just one error. The Ducks put away 19 kills during the third set.
The Buffaloes won the first point of the fourth set on Colyer's only attack error, a missed cut shot along the net, but Oregon quickly gained control of play with a 7-0 run. Colyer served six of those seven points and had a kill and an ace during the stretch. Back-to-back kills by the sophomore standout pushed the advantage to 15-5, the Ducks' first double-digit lead of the set.
Up 20-9, Oregon closed out the match with five-consecutive points. The run began with back-to-back kills by Gonzales.
Notable: UO has won eight in a row in its series with Colorado…Morgan Lewis' fourth kill was the 750th of her career…Pukis tied her season high with six kills…Colyer added 11 digs; tallied her ninth double-double of the season.
Up Next: The Ducks hit the road for their next four matches beginning with a top-10 meeting Thursday at Stanford. Oregon's next home match is Tuesday, Nov. 21, which will also be Senior Day against USC.
