Ducks fall in series finale
05/08/22 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. — No. 24 Oregon gave up a pair of two-run home runs as No. 2 Oregon State handed the Ducks a 4-0 loss on Sunday at Goss Stadium.Â
Â
How It Happened: Oregon's Jace Stoffal and Oregon State's Jake Pfennigs battled early as neither team scored in the first three innings.
Â
Oregon State (38-9, 18-6) broke the tie in the fourth. After a one-out walk, Matthew Gretler lined a Stoffal pitch over the center-field wall for a 2-0 lead. The Beavers added two more in the fifth, scoring on a Jacob Melton two-run homer after the leadoff batter reached on an error.
Â
Oregon (28-19, 13-11) stayed in the game, thanks to some good pitching from the bullpen. Logan Mercado inherited a one-on, no-out situation in the sixth and proceeded to retire all five batters he faced, the last four on strikeouts.
Â
Andrew Mosiello relieved Mercado with two outs in the seventh, and set down all four hitters he faced with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
Box Score Notes: Anthony Hall made his 100th career start … Brennan Milone (2-for-4) had his 19th multiple-hit game of the season, and the 21st of his career.
Â
Up Next: Oregon opens a two-game midweek nonconference series against UC San Diego on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
