Cid Leads Ducks to Game Two Win
05/04/19 | Softball
SALT LAKE CITY – Freshman Rachel Cid went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs on Saturday afternoon to lead the Oregon softball team to a 9-4 win over Utah in game two of the three-game series at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.
The Ducks pulled even in the series with the Utes and stayed alive in their quest to reach .500 and become eligible for the NCAA Tournament. Oregon (22-26, 5-15) will go for the series win over Utah in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened: The Ducks' offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first as Allee Bunker, Shaye Bowden and Cid hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to give Oregon an early 2-0 lead.
Utah (17-33, 5-15) got one back in the bottom half, bringing a leadoff bunt hit around to score on a two-out RBI single.
Cid picked up her second RBI of the game in the top of the third to extend Oregon's lead to 3-1. After a leadoff single by Bunker and a sacrifice bunt by Bowden, Cid lined a hot shot off the third-base bag and Bunker raced around from second and just beat the throw to the plate.
Great diving plays by Bunker in the second and Hannah Galey in the third helped keep Utah off the board, but the Utes struck for two runs on four hits in the fourth to tie the game, 3-3.
But Bunker and Cid got right back to work for the Ducks in the fifth to put Oregon back in front. Bunker ripped a one-out double down the third-base line and, after everyone was safe on a fielder's choice by Bowden, Cid lined a two-run double over the center fielder's head to give the Ducks a 5-3 lead.
Utah pulled within one in the sixth on an RBI double and had the tying run at third base, but UO starter Jordan Dail ended the inning with a strikeout and kept Oregon in front.
The Ducks rewarded Dail with four huge insurance runs in the top of the seventh, loading the bases before Lexi Wagner delivered a two-run single through the left side. Katelyn Howard picked up her first career RBI on an error, and Annalisa Williamson followed with an RBI single to make it 9-4. Dail stranded two runners in scoring position in the bottom half to secure the win.
In the Circle: Dail (18-14) threw her 21st complete game of the season, allowing four runs with five strikeouts and just one walk. The Ducks' workhorse in the circle is now alone in seventh on the UO single-season list with 229 strikeouts, and her 227.1 innings pitched currently rank 10th in program history.
What it Means: The Ducks kept their NCAA Tournament hopes alive with the win and now need to win their final four games to get back to .500 and be eligible for postseason play. Oregon will go for the series win over Utah on Sunday before hosting Arizona State for three next weekend in Eugene.
Notable: Oregon was without two of its top hitters once again as center fielder Haley Cruse and shortstop Jasmine Sievers were out with injuries for the second day in a row … Dail's 35 starts this season are tied for No. 8 in UO single-season history … Cid is now second on the team with 31 RBIs, one behind Bowden … Bunker is now leading the Ducks with a .355 batting average after recording her team-high 17th multi-hit game.
Up Next: The Ducks will aim for a series win over the Utes on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Network.
