Ducks Drop Pac-12 Opener

Despite phenomenal singles performances from Shweta Sangwan and Paiton Wagner, the Oregon women's tennis team fell, 5-2, to Cal on Friday.
EUGENE, Ore. – Shweta Sangwan defeated the No. 25 player in the nation and Paiton Wagner fought her way back to a three-set win, but it wasn't enough as the Oregon women's tennis team fell to 20th-ranked California, 5-2, on Friday at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: With four matches completed in singles, Shweta Sangwan and Paiton Wagner remained on the court for Oregon.
Despite a victory already in hand for Cal, tensions ran high in the final two matches. On court one, Shweta Sangwan found herself in a third-set tie-break against 25th-ranked Julia Rosenqvist, while a few courts over Paiton Wagner was trying to survive, down 5-6 in the third set.
You could tell by their demeanors that Sangwan and Wagner wouldn't walk off the court with anything less than a win.
Sangwan was unphased by her opponent's ranking throughout the match, staying calm and playing her own game which resulted in a 5-7, 6-4,10-8 victory. Wagner remained resilient during some tough breaks, coming back from being down 4-0 in the third set, to claim a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 victory on a overruling call.

On preparations for Pac-12s...
"We kind of framed it as we have a new season ahead of us and there's a lot of opportunity in front of us from now until the end of the season. So trying to continue to build confidence through that and take advantage of the opportunities that are there."
On Sangwan's singles performance…
"It's huge. She was a little under the weather throughout the week, so for her to be back on the court is huge for us. It helps us all the way down all the courts with that piece, and to get a win against a quality opponent like that is great for her individually and for us as team."
