The Oregon women's tennis team heads to the Evergreen State where it will face No. 9 Washington on March 15 and No. 36 Washington State on March 17.
EUGENE, Ore. – The Ducks' relentless Pac-12 schedule doesn't ease up as they travel to the Evergreen State to face two more ranked squads – No. 9 Washington on March 15 (1:30 p.m. PT) and No. 36 Washington State on March 17 (11 a.m. PT).
Washington enters the contest against the Ducks on a seven game winning streak, which includes victories over No. 10 Kansas and No. 12 North Carolina State. The Huskies' only loss of the season comes to second-ranked Vanderbilt.
While Washington State hasn't beaten any ranked squads, they have registered sweeps against six of their opponents – Idaho, Eastern Washington, Montana, Purdue, Seattle and Iowa state. However, the Cougars dropped their opening Pac-12 matches, losing 4-3 to both Utah and Colorado.
LAST TIME OUT
The Ducks opened Pac-12 play with a tough schedule, facing No. 20 California and No. 4 Stanford at home. Oregon couldn't hold on against the Northern California schools, falling 5-2 against Cal and 7-0 against Stanford.
The Bears go out to a quick start, claiming the doubles point and winning the first four singles matches. But despite a victory in hand for the visiting team, Shweta Sangwan and Paiton Wagner remained on the court for Oregon.
Tensions ran high in the final two matches. On court one, Sangwan found herself in a third-set tie-break against 25th-ranked Julia Rosenqvist, while a few courts over Wagner was trying to survive, down 5-6 in the third set.
Sangwan was unphased by her opponent's ranking throughout the match, staying calm and playing her own game which resulted in a 5-7, 6-4,10-8 victory. Wagner remained resilient during some tough breaks, coming back from being down 4-0 in the third set, to claim a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 victory on an overruling call.
Sunday against the Cardinal proved to be slightly more challenging for the Ducks.
In doubles, Rifanty Kahfiani and Allison Muville were the first off the court, claiming a 6-3 win over the 20th-ranked pair of Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon. But despite hard-fought matches on the neighboring courts, Stanford won at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
From there, the Cardinal carried over their momentum, tallying wins across the board.
