EUGENE, Ore. – Trailing 1-3 with three matches still on court, the University of Oregon men's tennis team completed a 4-3 comeback win over San Diego Friday evening at the Student Tennis Center. Sophomore Emmanuel Coste saved a match point on his way to the clinching, three-set win on court two. The Ducks improve to 4-1 in dual play.
Up Next: Friday's match was the first of three this weekend for the Ducks. The team is back on the court Saturday against Nevada at 11 a.m. PT and Sunday against New Mexico at 10 a.m. Oregon is in the midst of a six-match home stand that also features Boise State (Feb. 8), Louisville (Feb. 9) and LMU (Feb. 17).
"I wasn't in a good mindset at the beginning of the third set," Coste said. "I was down 5-3 and (my teammates) were saying 'we got this' and 'you will win this match.' Then, I changed my mind … just calm down, relax and enjoy the moment."
In a 3-3 dual, all focus turned to court two where Coste was in a decisive third set with No. 117 Gui Osorio. The San Diego junior had an early break and held the lead at 5-3. At 40-40, Coste saved a match point with a service winner and then got the break back to square the match at 5-5 in the third. The sophomore went on to clinch the win having won the final four games of the match.
San Diego (2-2) took the opening point of the match with wins on courts two and three in doubles play. In a matchup between ranked teams, the Ducks' 38th-ranked tandem of Charles Roberts and Armando Soemarno held a 6-5 advantage over No. 12 Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren when USD clinched the doubles point.
Senior Thomas Laurent got the Ducks on the board with a strong 6-0, 6-2 win over August Holmgren, the No. 83 player in the country. The win was Laurent's 11th of the season and 26th-career victory over a ranked opponent. Laurent, the fifth-ranked player in the country, now has 86 career wins in singles play and moves within seven of tying the program record.
The visitors regained the lead with back-to-back wins on courts four and six. Oregon needed wins from each court still in play which included Coste on two, junior Ty Gentry on three and freshman Joshua Charlton on five.
Gentry was the first to pull through, posting a 7-5, 6-2 win over Gamerov. The Duck junior has now won six matches in a row. On court five, Charlton evened the overall match at 3-all with a 6-4, 7-5 win against David Norfeldt. Charlton improved to 4-0 in dual play singles with the win.
