Ducks Post Three Wins in Weekend Finale
11/03/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon men's tennis team collected three wins Sunday but senior Ty Gentry, playing in the 'A' flight final, fell short of a repeat on the final day of the Duck Invitational. Over the course of the three-day home tournament, the Ducks picked up 10 wins—seven singles and three doubles—at the Student Tennis Center.
In the first of two sessions, junior transfer Brandon Lam led a trio of UO wins in consolation play with a straight-set win over Sema Pankin of Portland. Lam improved to 9-2; tied for the team lead in wins with Joshua Charlton. Freshmen Giorgio Soemarno and Luke Vandecasteele each won their opening sets and came away with three-set victories. Vandecasteele fought off three match points in his win.
Gentry and Philip Hjorth of Pacific squared off in Sunday's final, a rematch of last year's semifinal at the Duck Invitational. In each set, Gentry won the opening game before Hjorth reeled four games in a row. Gentry got one of the breaks back late in the second but Hjorth remained steady for the 6-3, 6-3 win.
