Pair of Sweeps to Begin 2020 Season
01/11/20 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon men's tennis team opened its 2020 dual campaign with a pair of sweeps Saturday, topping Eastern Washington and Portland State at the Student Tennis Center. The Ducks are back in action next weekend to host UCSB and No. 17 Michigan, both of which advanced to the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
Senior Ty Gentry and sophomore Joshua Charlton, the No. 8-ranked pair in the country, tallied a pair of 6-2 victories atop the Ducks' doubles lineup. Dating back to the fall season, the UO duo has won nine of 11 matches this season. With the two wins, Gentry pushed his career total to 64 which ties Manuel Kost (2001-05) for the ninth most in program history.
In singles play, Gentry rattled off the last four games of the evening to rally from a 3-5 deficit in the third set and secure Oregon's 7-0 victory over Portland State. He had the match-clinching win in the opening match of the day against Eastern Washington, a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Manuel Balce.
Charlton, ranked 14th in the country, registered two straight-set victories and now has a team-leading 12 wins in singles play. He was joined in double figures by junior transfer Brandon Lam who won his 10th of the year with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Erik Grimes of Eastern Washington.
In addition to Lam's dual debut with Oregon, freshmen Jesper Klöv-Nilsson and Luke Vandecasteele each had two singles victories Saturday.
