LAST TIME OUT
The Ducks traveled to Malibu, Calif., where they participated at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 26 and Sunday, Jan. 27.
Oregon got off to a slow start in Southern California, falling to Denver in the first round, 4-0.
On Sunday, the Ducks faced UNLV where, despite a thrilling comeback campaign, the Ducks could not surmount an early 3-0 deficit initiated by the Rebels.
Freshman Allison Mulville was the first to put the Ducks on the board, defeating her opponent in straight sets (6-4, 7-5).
Daniela Nasser was next for UO, the senior dominated in her second set to come out on top (7-6, 6-1), giving the Ducks their second point of the match and narrowing the gap.
It came down to Shweta Sangwan and Rifanty Kahfiani who both found themselves in three-set battles. Ultimately, Kahfiani couldn't hold on, dropping her match in a close one and sealing a 4-2 win for UNLV.
RECORD SETTING SENIORS
Shweta Sangwan's 6-2, 6-3 win over Veronica Miroshnichenko of LMU on Jan. 18 was her 58th win in an Oregon uniform. Daniela Nasser recently joined Sangwan at 58 career wins after defeating Anna Bogoslavetsof UNLV, 6-7(4), 6-1 on Feb. 27. With 58 wins under each of their belts, both seniors tie Kara Yoshida (1992-95) for the 10th most wins in program history.
Sangwan and Nasser need just one more win to tie Lindsay Bartlett (1981-84) for No. 9 on UO's career win list with 59. They are also seven wins behind head coach Courtney Nagle who currently has the seveth most career wins in UO history with 65.
IN THE RANKINGS
Senior Daniela Nasser came away from the fall season ranked as the No. 50 singles player in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the first time the senior has ever been nationally ranked. Fellow senior Shweta Sangwan entered the spring season listed as the No. 81 singles player.
Nasser finished the fall season with an impressive 10 wins, the best start of her collegiate career. The Tampa, Fla., native also beat three ranked opponents and won five of the six three-set thrillers she found herself in.
Sangwan also had some notable feats during the fall. Sangwan recorded seven wins over 10 matches, including a win over the No. 23 player in the nation, Lauren Proctor of Winthrop, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4
WELCOME TO THE TEAM, TARYN
On Jan. 17, the Oregon women's tennis team welcomed walk-on freshman Taryn Fujimori to the squad.
Prior to joining the varsity roster, Fujimori was a member of Oregon's club tennis team. Fujimori also played tennis for the same high school that former Duck Alyssa Tobita (2014-18) attended, Mililani High School.
HEAD COACH COURTNEY NAGLE
Oregon athletics director Rob Mullens announced Courtney Nagle as the Ducks' women's tennis head coach on July 20, 2018. Nagle was a four-year letterwinner at Oregon (2002-05) and a former volunteer assistant for the Ducks in 2005 and 2010. She spent the last four seasons as the top assistant for a highly successful North Carolina program, helping lead the Tar Heels to a 122-12 dual match record, three ACC titles and two Intercollegiate Tennis Association national championships. Long considered one of the top assistants in the nation, Nagle was named the assistant coach of the year in 2017 by the ITA.
