Doubles Point Crucial in Loss at Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – The University of Oregon men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 setback to 10th-ranked Stanford. The Ducks are now 3-1 through the first two weekends of the dual season.
Up Next: The Ducks return to their home courts Feb. 1 to host San Diego. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT at the Student Tennis Center. Oregon will play its next six matches in Eugene.
Oregon split a pair of matches during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend having posted a 4-1 win Saturday over Minnesota. Sunday marked the first of two regular-season matches between Oregon and Stanford. The teams will meet again April 19 in Eugene.
In doubles play, the opening point of the match came down to a tiebreaker on court two. Stanford (4-0) got on the board first with a win at the top spot. However, the Ducks responded with 7-5 win on court three by Emmanuel Coste and Thomas Laurent. Oregon saved a pair of match points on court two but the host Cardinal secured the 1-0 match lead with a 7-6(4) win.
Stanford jumped out to a 3-0 advantage with singles wins at court two and six. With Laurent locked in a top-20 matchup at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, the Ducks were up a set on courts three and four with Ty Gentry leading No. 101 William Genesen and Riki Oshima up on Michael Genender, respectively.
However, No. 20 Axel Geller closed out a win over Laurent to secure the 4-0 win for Stanford. When the dual was clinched, Gentry led 6-2, 4-3 while Oshima was ahead 7-6, 1-1. On court five, freshman Joshua Charlton had just dropped the opening set—7-6(9)—to No. 29 Sameer Kumar when play was stopped.
