Yovan fans 15, Ducks win
04/28/18 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Kenyon Yovan struck out a career-high 15 batters to lead Oregon to a 9-2 Pac-12 Conference win over USC at PK Park on Saturday.
Yovan's 15 strikeouts were the third most in Oregon history, trailing David Peterson's 20-strikeout performance against Arizona State exactly one year ago and his 17-strikeout game against Mississippi State on March 3, 2017.
How it happened: Oregon (20-20, 7-13 Pac-12) jumped out to an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning for the second straight day. Jakob Goldfarb reached first on a hit by pitch, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a Kyle Kasser infield hit before scoring on a wild pitch.
The Ducks added another run in the second inning to push the lead to 2-0. Taylor Travess started the inning with a one-out bunt single and came around to score after three walks by USC starter Quentin Longrie (4-4).
USC (19-20, 7-13 Pac-12) answered with a pair of runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. Dillon Paulson drove in a run with a one-out triple and then scored on a Stephen Dubb sacrifice fly.
Oregon took command in the bottom of the fourth around a 31-minute rain delay. Before the stoppage in play, Ray Soderman drove in Taylor Travess with sacrifice fly. Travess reached third after striking out on a pitch in the dirt that USC catcher Kaleb Murphy threw into right field.
After the rain delay, which came with the bases loaded and two outs, Spencer Steer delivered a two-RBI single to give Oregon a three run lead. Gabe Matthews and Jonny DeLuca followed with back-to-back run scoring singles to push the Ducks lead to 7-2.
Oregon added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings. Steer led off the sixth reaching on a hit by pitch before coming around to score on three Trojan wild pitches. Ryne Nelson walked to lead off the seventh and scored on a Goldfarb RBI double.

On Yovan's performance...
"It was a spectacular performance for him to have 15 strikeouts and no walks in those conditions - you saw how it affected the other team. But he dominated and was the story of the game."
On how the team bounced back from last night...
"Well they had fun today, we didn't execute quite frankly. But the had more fun and I thought they had more character, and rather than over-trying they were more relaxed at the plate, so from that aspect I thought they were much better, and our guys took advantages of the opportunities today. You know when you've lost nine out of the last ten, and six in a row, winning feels really, really good.

On getting off to a good start...
"Yeah, momentum is key, especially on cold day. Them being from Southern California, we knew it was going to be tough playing in the rain so coach told us to stay strong in the head. We've been struggling as of late, so that was definitely a good momentum shift for us, especially to get the bats going."
Duck Notes: Yovan (4-2) struck out the first six batters he faced, tying Cole Irvin (February 26, 2016) for the school record for most batters struck out in a row … He also was the first since David Peterson (March 3, 2017) to fan five straight … Yovan's 15 are tied for the third-most in a single game by an individual in Division I baseball this season … Yovan did not walk a batter over his eight innings of work while Peterson went eight innings without any walks against Mississippi State and issued one free pass in a complete game against Arizona State … Steer is now tied with A.J. Balta (2014-17) and Mark Karaviotis (2014-16) for fourth on Oregon's career hit by pitch list with 24 … Goldfarb recorded two hits for the second straight game and 14th time this season and is 4-for-6 with three doubles and three runs scored in the series … Daniel Patzlaff drew a career-high three walks.
On deck: The Ducks and Trojans will play the rubber match Sunday at 12 p.m.
