Modly Leads Ducks To Dominant 22-9 Victory In Tournament Opener
04/26/18 | Women's Lacrosse
BOULDER, Colo. – Senior captain Natalie Modly netted six goals as the Oregon women's lacrosse team exploded for a dominant 22-9 victory over California to open the inaugural Pac-12 Championship Tournament Thursday.
Seven Ducks found the back of the net against the Golden Bears, with four of them recording at least three goals.
How it Happened: The Ducks' (9-8, 4-6) blistering pace was set early in the game with UO jumping out to a 9-1 lead barely eight minutes in.
By the time the dust settled, seniors Jill Zubillaga and Mariah Gatti had already recorded hat tricks.
After both teams settled down for a scoreless 10 minutes, Cal inched their way back into the game closing out the period on a 4-1 run capped off by a goal from Caroline Corzel with one second left on the clock.
The Golden Bears outshot UO 20-16 in the first half, but the Ducks finished with all 16 shots on goal to take an 11-6 lead at halftime.
After Cal and the Ducks traded two goals each, Modly turned up the heat, ripping off the next four straight goals over an eight-minute span to give UO a 17-8 lead at the 13:49 mark.
Oregon closed out the game on a 5-0 run thanks to two goals each from Shannon Williams and Lexy Biller followed by freshman Lilian Stump's second of the game.
Beast Modly: Not including her single-game high six goals, Modly was a huge factor in Oregon's opening round win. The Annapolis, Md., native recorded a single-game best seven draw controls to go along with three ground balls and one caused turnover. She finished with six of her seven shots in the game on frame.
Single-Season Prowess: In her first full season as an attacker, Zubillaga has been a force for UO. She finished the game against Cal with four goals marking the seventh time this season she has recorded four or more goals. The Kennett Square, Pa., native has recorded 55 goals on the year to become UO's new single-season leader. She passes Shannon Williams record of 51 set last season.
Notable: Senior Cambi Cukar was a general on the field, dishing out a single-game high seven assists against Cal. She was just two assists shy of tying the UO record of nine set by Shannon Propst in 2014 ...Oregon's 22 goals marked the most goals scored by the Ducks since they tied the single-game record of 23 against Coastal Carolina in 2014 … Modly's six goals was one shy of the individual single-game record of seven set by Jana Drummond in 2009.

On the lopsided victory against Cal…
"It's the postseason; it's season 2.0. We spoke about that, and what it takes mentally and physically to be able to compete with this being the first Pac-12 Tournament. We started the game with high energy and the shots were going in. We won six or seven on the draw circle to start. That comes from focus, discipline, and just being fired up. We were really excited to be here. We got back to playing team lacrosse since the last time we saw Cal. They beat us and I think that brought a new factor to our players. We understood we wanted to extend the season for our seniors for this team to keep going."
On facing Colorado for the third time this season…
"We'll be facing that offense for the third time. They're an unbelievable team. They're the one seed and Pac-12 champions for a reason. Their offense is unbelievable and their attack is probably the most potent in all of the country. We have a lot of work cut out for us on how to win against them and stop them. They're dangerous in the draw circle. They play great team defense. We've seen them twice and we hung with them for a little bit but they pulled away. So, we have got to be able to put together a 60-minute game to be able to give us a chance."
Up Next: the Ducks will face regular season champions and No. 1 overall seed Colorado in the semifinals Friday at 12 p.m. PT.
