Ducks Fall Short At Kansas
02/16/18 | Women's Tennis
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oregon women's tennis team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks, 4-1, in their first of two matches in the Sunflower State Friday afternoon.
How it Happened: The Ducks (5-3) fell behind early as Kansas secured the doubles point.
In their first pairing of the spring season, Senior Nia Rose and sophomore Julia Eshet recorded a 6-1 win over KU's Janet Koch and Tatiana Nikolaeva at the No. 2 spot.
The win improved the pair to 4-0 on the year and was UO's only doubles victory of the day.
In singles play, four matches went into third sets, with two left unfinished.
After the Jayhawks extended their lead to 3-0 with wins at the No. 6 and No. 2 spot, freshman Julia Lilien got UO on the board with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over Maria Toran Ribes at the No. 5 position.
Senior Alyssa Tobita looked to keep the match going taking Anastasia Rychagova to a third set at the No. 1 spot. Tobita gave it her all, but could not get the best of the No. 2 ranked player in the country, falling to Rychagova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
Notable: With her win, Julia Lilien improves to 5-2 on the year and is one of only three Ducks to record at least five singles wins this spring … This is the third match this season in which three or more singles matches have gone to third sets.
Up Next: The Ducks close out their road trip against William and Mary tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT.
