Ducks Sweep Away The Competition
02/17/18 | Women's Tennis
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oregon women's tennis team closed out their road trip with a dominant 7-0 win over William and Mary Saturday morning at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
How it Happened: The Ducks (6-3) found themselves in a battle early for the doubles point against the Tribe.
William and Mary took control winning, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot, but were locked in a battle with UO at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions with both teams trading points.
The duo of Daniela Nasser and Julia Lilien kept Oregon alive with a 6-4 win over Natalia Perry and Clara Tanielian at the No. 3 position.
With the doubles point on the line, Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan forced their matchup into a tiebreaker set. UO's No. 10 ranked duo would pull it out in extras, downing Rosie Cheng and Olivia Thaler, 7-6(3), to clinch the doubles point.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Ducks powered through William and Mary in singles action.
Freshmen Lilien and Paiton Wagner made quick work of their opponents at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively, to extend the Ducks lead to 3-0.
Needing only one more point to clinch the match, it was a race to see who would win as all four remaining Ducks won their opening sets and were leading midway through their second.
Almost simultaneously, Tobita, Sangwan and Nasser won their matches at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively, to secure the match for Oregon. After a 7-5 win in her opening set, Tobita downed No. 68 Rosie Cheng, 7-5, 6-2, for her second win over a ranked opponent this season.
Sangwan picked up a ranked win as well with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 120 Clara Tanielian. The win marks Sangwan's third victory over a ranked opponent this season. The junior has now won four of her last five singles matches with three of those wins coming against ranked foes.
Sophomore Julia Eshet gave the Ducks the clean sweep with a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory over Ekaterina Stepanova at the No. 3 position.
Notable: The win is Oregon's first clean sweep of the season.
Quotable: Head Coach Alison Silverio
On the Ducks performance in Kansas...
"We competed against two high level teams during this road trip. We were in the trenches a bit this weekend, our mental performance and taking care of the details were not up to the standard of our program. Tough lesson to learn, but a necessary lesson. It's a great growth opportunity for us to positively respond and get better."
Up Next: The Ducks finally return to Eugene to open a five-match home stand against Baylor Friday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. PT.
