Waves Capsize Ducks In ITA Kick-Off Championship
01/28/18 | Women's Tennis
MALIBU, Calif. – The Oregon Women's tennis team could not pull off the upset against No. 6 Pepperdine Sunday in the ITA Kick-Off Championship match, falling to the Waves 4-0.
How it Happened: The Ducks opened the match in a tight battle for the doubles point against the Waves. After Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan fell at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, Daniela Nasser and Paiton Wagner looked to fend off Ashley Lahey and Adrijana Lekaj at the No. 3 position to tie it up.
Nasser and Wagner took the match into extra games, but could not pull of the win falling, 7-6(4), to give Pepperdine a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Oregon looked to rally in singles play for the second straight match, but faced a much tougher test squaring off against ranked opponents in four of the six matches.
Lightning would not strike twice for the Ducks Sunday afternoon, though, as the Waves rattled off three straight set wins to clinch the match victory.
Facing the No. 28 and No. 31 ranked players, respectively, Julia Eshet and Shweta Sangwan dropped their matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots by scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1.
Evgeniya Levashova picked up the third win for Pepperdine defeating Wagner, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot.
What it Means: With the loss, the Ducks fail to earn an automatic entry to this year's ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

"Our team had positive experiences and lessons this weekend at the ITA Kick-Off. The greatest lesson was the opportunity to play in extreme elements and finding a way to battle through. We are excited to get back to work this week and sharpen up our transitional plays."
Up Next: The Ducks will close out their five-match road trip in Atlanta facing Georgia State Saturday, Feb. 3, followed by Georgia Tech Sunday.
