No. 35 Ducks Top No. 32 Trojans in Historic Win
03/19/17 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – In historic fashion, the No. 35 University of Oregon women's tennis team took down No. 32 USC 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center for the program's first win over the Trojans.
After falling to UCLA on Friday 4-1, the Ducks bounced back to split the home-opening Pac-12 weekend. Oregon moves to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in Pac-12 play, while USC is 4-7 overall, and 0-3 in the conference. The Ducks are 5-2 at home.
The all-time record between the Ducks and the Trojans moves to 22-1.
How it Happened: In doubles, junior Nia Rose and freshman Jahnvi Clark got things rolling with a 6-4 victory over Sydney Van Alphen and Angela Kulikov. With tight battles on the remaining courts, senior Marlou Kluiving and freshman Julia Eshet clinched the Doubles point for the Ducks with a 6-4 result over No. 21-ranked Zoë Katz and Gabby Smith. Unranked, Eshet and Kluiving are now 2-0 against ranked opponents this season. Sophomore Shweta Sangwan and junior Alyssa Tobita's match against Madison Westby and Rianna Valdes went unfinished.
In singles, Kluving kept the momentum in Oregon's favor with a straight-set win over Kulikov, 6-4, 6-1. With the score 2-0, Oregon, USC would add their first point of the day as Valdes defeated Rose, 6-2, 6-4. The Trojans would even things up 2-2, with a 7-6(3), 6-2 win in the No. 5 position by No. 113-ranked Westby over sophomore Daniela Nasser. USC took their first lead of the day as No. 25 Smith took down Sangwan, 7-6(3), 6-4. With the score at 3-2, USC, Eshet evened things out with an exciting three-set win over No. 88-ranked Katz, 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4 on court one. With the score at 3-3, everything came down to the third and final set between Tobita and No. 38 Jessica Failla on court two. Tobita got the job done and took down her first ranked opponent of the season, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4.
What it Means: Today's 4-3 victory over the Trojans is the Ducks first win over a California school in program history. The all-time series between the Ducks and Trojans moves to 22-1.
Oregon is now 2-3 against nationally ranked opponents, with its two wins being over Pac-12 foes (Washington (then No. 25), USC No. 32).
With their win today, the unranked Doubles pair of Julia Eshet and Marlou Kluiving are 2-0 over ranked opponents this season.
Quotes: Head coach Alison Silverio –
"We try not to focus too much on the past, but certainly we know that we haven't been able to get it done against a California school yet. But, I think the girls did a phenomenal job focusing on what our game plans were and what we needed to do to execute. That's what I'm most proud of, because we stayed tough in the adverse moments and it was obviously a down-to-the-wire match, close in every spot. USC competed their hearts out. They're a great team, but we were better in the tougher moments today."
Junior Alyssa Tobita –
"We wanted to go out there, play our way and win it for ourselves. We were focusing on hitting all the right shots and to not be afraid. Having my teammates all lined up cheering on the final match really pushed me to finish it for them. To have a moment like that last week against Washington, and then to experience it again at home today was really special."
"We started out playing a bunch of tough teams at the beginning, but it was nice to have that early competition to push our limits once we got to Pac-12 play. Whenever we go out to play the California schools, we've been the underdogs, so knowing that we had nothing to lose helped us in a big way."
