Ducks Defeat Columbia to Split ITA Kick-Off Weekend
01/29/17 | Women's Tennis
Chapel Hill, N.C. – The Oregon women's tennis team defeated the Columbia Lions 4-2 in the dual match consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament. The Ducks will return to Eugene 1-1 on the weekend at the Cone-Kenfield Center at the University of North Carolina.
Yesterday, the Ducks fell to the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels, 4-0. Despite the loss, the Ducks earned a doubles victory against a top-50 ranked opponent and battled three players ranked within the top 10 nationally. Oregon is now 3-2 to open the 2017 season.
"This weekend was all about battling," head coach Alison Silverio said. "We competed against two very high-level teams. We had a hard fought match with UNC and certainly learned a lesson that carried over to today's match with Columbia. I was impressed with our courage in adverse moments and was pleased to see the execution with our feet. The Ducks are enjoying the victory today and will be all in this coming week of practice."
How it Happened: In doubles, the Lions came out strong and claimed two matches to solidify the doubles point. Columbia's duo of Adi Milstein and Alexandra Solovyez sophomore defeated Shweta Sangwan and junior Nia Rose of Oregon, 6-4. With a final of 6-2, Lions Rima Asatrian and Andrea Kevakian were victorious against the Ducks' junior Alyssa Tobita and freshman Rifanty Kahfiani. The Ducks were able to get one doubles win with the 6-2 result from senior Marlou Kluiving and freshman Julia Eshet over Ali Pollack and Renee Ren.
In singles, Rose was taken down by Solovyez, 6-3, 6-1, giving the Lions an early 2-0 lead. Tobita went into a tiebreaker in the first set 7-6 (8-6) and took the second set with a 6-1 win. Kluiving also moved the Ducks' momentum with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hu of Columbia. In a 7-5 win in the first set and 6-3 victory in the second, Kahfiani defeated Milstein. Oregon's Sangwan defeated Asatrian in two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to solidify the final 4-2 Ducks' win. Eshet's match against Kevakian was at 4-6, 7-5, but ultimately went unfinished.
What it Means: The Ducks have a winning record to start off the 2017 campaign and have battled against the No. 2 team in the country (UNC) and No. 11 Georgia Tech in their opening five matches. Through mixing up the doubles pairings and the singles lineup, the Ducks can have confidence continuing their road matches and getting into a rhytm before returning to the Student Tennis Center in Eugene.
