Ducks Travel to Santa Barbara for UCSB Fall Classic
10/06/16 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – With Thomas Laurent competing at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., the majority of the rest of the Oregon men's tennis team heads to Santa Barbara, Calif. for this weekend's UCSB Fall Classic.
"We're looking for the guys to continue to work on the areas we focus on for each guy in practice," Associate Head Coach Jonas Piibor said. "We want the guys to stay mentally tough and compete with tons of positive energy."
Five Ducks will compete in the event, including three returners and two newcomers.
Singles: Junior Simon Stevens, who went 19-10 last season in singles, leads the Ducks into Santa Barbara at the top of the singles bracket in flight A. Joining Stevens in flight A is fellow junior Cormac Clissold, who was 15-7 overall in singles in 2015. Simons will take on Eli Whittle of UC Davis in his first match, while Clissold will face off against Antoine Noel of Cal Poly.
Competing in the singles flight B for the Ducks will be sophomore Ethan Young-Smith. In his first collegiate season in 2015, Young-Smith shined with a 21-13 record in singles, the second-most on the team to Jayson Amos. Young-Smith will take on Jesse Ross of UC Davis to open his weekend.
The two newcomers competing are Ty Gentry (flight B) and Fabian Soemarno (flight C), the brother of Armando Soemarno who is in Tulsa with Laurent and Amos but not competing due to injury. Gentry comes to the Ducks as a five-star recruit out of Tumwater, Wash., and will open his weekend against San Francisco's Woravin Kumthonkittikul. Soemarno will play Ryan Shen (California) in his first match.
Doubles: Four of the five Ducks going to Santa Barbara will also play doubles in addition to singles. Stevens and Gentry will team up to take on a duo from Pacific in flight A, while Clissold and Soemarno will join forces against a doubles pair from UC Davis.
