10/09/16 | Men's Tennis
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Oregon men's tennis team wrapped up the UCSB Fall Classic over the weekend with a strong showing in doubles and now turn their attention to this week's ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
How It Happened: With five Ducks competing in Santa Barbara, there were mixed results across the board in the first event of the fall for the participating players. The duo of freshman Ty Gentry and junior Simon Stevens made it to the finals of doubles flight A, battling with Maxime Cressy and Daniel Gealer (UCLA) before eventually falling to settle for second place. The pair defeated Christian Brockstedt Mert Zincirli (San Francisco), 8-7, in the second round to advance to the finals.
Ethan Young-Smith and Cormac Clissold rounded out doubles play for Oregon with a 1-2 showing, defeating a UCSB duo in their final match.
Young-Smith went 2-2 in singles flight B, finishing with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Chase Masciorini of UCSB in his final match. The sophomore fell to Xander Veys (Fresno State), 6-2, 6-2, to move into the consolation side of the bracket, and then took down UCSB's Teague Hamilton, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to face Masciorini.
In singles flight A, Clissold also came away with a 2-2 weekend. After winning his opening match on Friday, Clissold lost to Mert Zincirli (USF), 5-7, 6-1, 4-6, to go to the consolation bracket. Clissold then dropped his next match to Nicolas Moreno de Alboran (UCSB) before winning his last match against Bryce McKelvie (UC Davis), 6-4, 6-1.
Stevens finished 1-3 in singles in Santa Barbara, dropping two of his first three matches before beating Antione Noel (Cal Poly), 6-1, 6-4, in his final match.
Gentry won one of his matches over Pacific 6-4, 6-4 to finish 1-3 in singles in his first collegiate event. Fellow freshman Fabian Soemarno did not come away with a win in his first taste of collegiate tennis.

On the weekend…
"We got to play a lot of matches this weekend, which is always very important during the early fall. It was a mixed bag of results, but I feel like we played better today than we did yesterday and the day before."
On moving forward…
"We now look forward to going to work early this week, and then we'll pack a good team and head for Regionals."
Up Next: The program returns to Eugene for a few days of practice before heading to the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkley, Calif. this week (Oct. 12-16).
