UO Drops Nail Biter to No. 24 ASU
04/11/15 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE – The Oregon women's tennis team couldn't quite pull off the upset on Friday in Pac-12 play and fell to No. 24 Arizona State 4-2 at the UO Outdoor Tennis Courts.
How It Happened: After dropping the first doubles match 8-3 at No. 3, Oregon's No. 1 and No. 2 battled back to keep the match close. UO's No. 1 couple of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita fought off ASU's No. 29-ranked doubles team of Desirae Krawczyk and Stephanie Vlad to lead 6-5 after trailing 5-4.
However, moments after the Ducks No. 1 crew took their lead, UO's No. 2 doubles pair of Nicole Long and Marlou Kluiving fell 8-4 and gave No. 27 Arizona State the doubles point.
Rose picked up a win at No. 1 singles when No. 27 Krawczyk bowed out with an injury while Rose was ahead 3-2 in the first set, and tied the team score up at 1-1. The victory gave Rose her third win against a ranked opponent in as many weeks.
ASU regained the lead when Leighann Sahagun bested Sofia Hager 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 doubles.
With the Sun Devils on top 2-1, Long and Kassidy Jump duked it out in an intense back-and-forth battle in the third set with Jump coming out on top in the tiebreaker. The win gave ASU the 3-1 lead with 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory.
Less than two minutes after Long fell at No. 3 singles, Tobita completed her comeback to bring the Ducks within 3-2 with a dominating 6-0 win in the third set.
With Tobita's win, Lina Åkesson and Kluiving's match became more crucial than ever to Oregon's quest to upset the 24th-ranked Sun Devils.
With No. 4 and No. 5 singles both deep into the third set, Ebony Panoho was able to clinch the match for ASU over Åkesson with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 5 spot.
After Panoho clinched the victory for ASU, Kluiving and Joanna Smith's match at No. 4 singles was abanonded so the Sun Devils could make their flight.
Quotable: "It was a hard fought battle today. We competed every spot, but Arizona State did a better job stepping up in the pressure moments. Our team continues to gain great experiences this season." -- UO head coach Alison Silverio
Up Next: Oregon will return to the courts bright and early Sunday, April 12, to take on No. 45 Arizona at 9:30 a.m. (PT).
