Oregon Upends No. 45 Arizona, 4-3
04/12/15 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE – With the team score tied at 3-3, sophomore Marlou Kluiving put the team on her shoulders and played beautifully in the second set with a dominating 6-0 win over Devin Chypyha to clinch the upset victory for Oregon over No. 45Arizona on Sunday at the Student Tennis Center.
How It Happened: The doubles point came down to the wire after doubles No. 3 and No. 2 finished within a minute of each other. Lina Åkesson and Paloma Gomez weren't able to fend off Laura Oldham and Chypyha at doubles No. 3, falling 8-4. However, Kluiving and Nicole Long made quick work of their Arizona counterparts to win 8-4.
Down 3-2, Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita roared back to upend UA's No. 23 doubles pair of Briar Preston and Shayne Austin 8-5 to give Oregon (9-10, 3-6 Pac-12) the doubles point.
The Wildcats tied things up in singles when Preston, the No. 83rd singles player in the nation, dispatched Tobita 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Later on, Austin would give UA (13-7, 3-6 Pac-12) the 2-1 lead after taking the match from Åkesson in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
Arizona looked primed to take the match when No. 54 Lauren Marker bested Rose 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and gave Arizona the 3-1 lead.
However, the Ducks did not lay down and battled back to take the remaining three singles matches to upset the No. 45-ranked Wildcats, 4-3.
Long got the rally going when she took down Oldham 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Senior Sofia Hager held off a feisty Inge Hendrikx at No. 6 singles to equalize the score at 3-3 and set the stage for Kluiving with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hendrikx.
Odds & Ends: Sunday's win ended a five-match losing skid in Pac-12 play for the Ducks ... The last time Oregon won a doubles point prior to Sunday's match was on March 22 when the Ducks upset No. 56 Colorado in Boulder. UO was ranked No. 60 at the time of the match against CU. The last time Oregon defeated a ranked opponent was also against No. 56 Colorado.
Quotable: “It was a valiant effort from both sides today. We were able to get positive momentum going when we clinched the doubles point, and our upperclassmen stepped up in a big way during singles. I'm proud to see each team member contributing.” – UO head coach Alison Silverio.
Up Next: The Ducks will first head north for a border war with Washington for their final road match and Pac-12 match of the year on April 17. Oregon will then return home on April 19 for its final dual match of the year. UO will also honor its two seniors, Hager and Long as they play in their final home match in a Duck uniform against Idaho at 11 a.m.
