EUGENE – The Oregon women's lacrosse team rebounded from its home-opening loss with a resounding, 21-3, win over Saint Mary's on Sunday at Papé Field. The Ducks had 11 different players score with six of the 11 scoring multiple goals.
How It Happened: The goals came early and often for the Women of Oregon as they dismantled Saint Mary's. Senior Olivia Pyne started things off for Oregon (3-1, 1-1 MPSF) on a perfectly executed play in UO's first possession on a pass from Cambi Cukar 49 seconds into the game.
The Ducks would tack on four more goals before Claire Healy would put Saint Mary's (0-2, 0-2 MPSF) on the board with 17:54 left on the clock. Pyne would start another run for Oregon when Cukar found the senior on the same play as before. UO wrapped up the half with an 11-1 lead behind Holly Johnson's natural hat-trick.
Oregon continued to the pound the SMC keeper in the second half and capped off its 13-0 run after Johnson netted her fourth goal of the day – a career-high for the junior – with 15:02 left to play. The UO offense kept the ball away from the Gaels for most of the game with a staggering 20-6 differential in draw controls.
The Saint Mary's offense was held scoreless for 32:52 spanning from the first half until the Gaels netted a pair of goals two-thirds of the way through the second half.
Oregon added another three goals before the final horn sounded as the Ducks came away with their first conference win of the year.
Janelle Parker started in goal for the Ducks for the fourth-straight game to pick up her third win. Jenna Morris and Becca Katzen made their 2015 debut for Oregon in the second half.
First Timers: Several Oregon players played in their first collegiate game while Mariah Gatti and Maddie Terefenko both found the back of the net playing in their first-ever collegiate game. Gatti netted her goal at the 17:27 mark on a free-position shot while Terefenko fired in the final Oregon goal of the day.
Odds & Ends: With 16 assists today, Oregon tied the single-game assists record that was set back on March 12, 2007, against Vermont … The Ducks also tied a nine-year old record with 37 points today that was set back on March 3, 2006, coincidentally against Saint Mary's.
By The Numbers: Cukar dished out a team-high and season-high six assists today to lead the Ducks … Pyne finished the day with a pair of goals and three assists to tie her career-high of five points, while her three assists bested her previous career-high of two … Casey Brogan tied her career-high for the third time as the senior tallied her first hat-trick of the 2015 season … Devon Frazer's three assists was also a new career-high, while her four points matched her career-high ... Carly O'Connell is now third all-time in draw controls for UO after picking up six on Sunday, surpassing Nikki Puszcz, with 144 draw controls just four games into her junior season.
Quotable: “I was very pleased with the overall effort from everyone. I think our starting crew set the tone for today, playing with a discipline and focus we lacked a bit of yesterday. It was nice to see us make that turnaround to bounce back and fix our unforced error.” – UO head coach Jen Beck
Up Next: Oregon continues its homestand next week when the Ducks entertain George Washington at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10. The showdown with the Colonials will be the first meeting between the two schools and the first of three games for UO in a five-day span.
