Ducks Lose Heartbreaker at Utah
02/21/15 | Women's Basketball
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Utah point guard Danielle Rodriguez hit a game-winning bucket with two seconds left and the Ducks lost, 66-64, on Friday night at the Huntsman Center.
Wild Ending: Lexi Petersen hit a huge three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining to give Oregon a 65-64 lead, but the Utah official scorer determined he had given the Ducks an extra point (a made free throw when it was actually missed) earlier in the second half and, after a lengthy official review, it was changed to a tie game, 64-64. With the possession and an inbounds in front of the Utah bench, Rodriguez was able to get into the lane and finish with the game-winning bucket.
The Ducks dropped to 12-14 (5-10 Pac-12) with the tough loss while the Utes improved to 9-17 (3-12) overall and 9-6 at home.
Stat Sheet: Jillian Alleyne had her NCAA-best 24th double-double of the season and 65th of her career with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Alleyne has had 12 in row since getting 16 points and 18 rebounds against Oregon State on Jan. 11. Lexi Petersen matched Alleyne with 18 points and scored 14 of the Ducks' final 15 points, including the go-ahead but really game-tying three-pointer with 10 seconds remaining. Drea Toler had two points at the half but finished with 12 on 6-of-11 shooting with four assists.
How It Happened: Utah led early and after a 9-2 run took a 22-14 lead with 7:20 left before halftime. The Utes had knocked down a trio of three-pointers at that point while Oregon had not attempted a shot from long range. The Ducks answered, however, with an 8-0 run to tie it up, 22-22, with 3:38 remaining in the half. Oregon took a 24-22 lead on a pair of free throws by Alleyne but Utah knocked down a three on the other end to take the lead right back. It was tied up, 26-26, going into halftime. Alleyne had a team-high 13 points at the break. Oregon went 11-of-22 from the field in the first half but 0-for-1 from three.
In the second half Utah owned a 38-34 lead with 12:44 left to play. The Ducks had yet to make a three at that point (0-for-2) while the Utes had knocked down five (5-for-16).
The three-pointers kept coming for the Utes, who built a 49-38 lead with 9:08 remaining. Oregon was able to get it down to six after a Loper layup made it a 55-49 lead for Utah with 2:20 remaining and tied it up with 10 seconds left before Rodriguez hit the game-winning basket.
Huntsman Center Streak: The Ducks' last win in the Huntsman Center was on Dec. 31, 1984 (66-61). Oregon has lost seven straight games in Salt Lake City since then, including three meetings at Utah since they joined the Pac-12 for the 2011-12 season.
Records Watch: After grabbing 13 rebounds against the Utes, Alleyne is now 77 rebounds away from matching Bev Smith's all-time UO record of 1,362. Alleyne has 1,285 in her career.
