01/12/15 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE – The Oregon women's basketball team fell to the No. 11-ranked Oregon State Beavers 77-48 on Sunday night at Matthew Knight Arena in the 94th edition of the Civil War.
How It Happened: Both teams started the first half sluggish, but the Beavers (14-1, 4-0 Pac-12) used a 12-2 run to go ahead 19-6 at the under-eight media timeout. The Ducks (8-7, 1-3 Pac-12) were unable to find any rhythm from the floor and went scoreless for 8:36 during that stretch before Jillian Alleyne found the basket at the 8:57 mark.
Oregon cut the lead to 25-12 thanks to back-to-back buckets from Alleyne along with one from Drea Toler with 3:53 left in the first half. The Ducks headed into the break trailing 33-16 after OSU finished the half on an 8-4 run. Oregon also trailed 33-16 at halftime in its Friday loss in Corvallis.
UO got within 35-24 after Lexi Petersen drained a three from the left side early in the second half, but OSU's Sydney Wiese answered right back with one of her own on the ensuing possession. Wiese's three sparked another OSU run, this time 26-6, and pushed the Beaver lead to 61-30 with 10:01 left to play in the game. Oregon State went on to win 77-48 and sweep the series.
By The Numbers: Midway through the first half, Alleyne had as many rebounds (10) as the Ducks had points… With her 16 points and 18 boards, Alleyne tallied her 13th double-double this season through 15 games…She did not get a double-double in the last two games yet still leads the nation with 13... The Ducks were outscored 40-24 in the paint…As a team, UO shot 31.8 percent from the floor (21-for-66) and 30 percent from beyond the arc (3-for-10) compared to OSU's 44.6 shooting percentage (29-of-65).
What It Means: Oregon has lost nine straight to rival Oregon State after being swept this season. Oregon will look to rebound against another rival, entertaining Washington (Jan. 16) before battling Washington State (Jan. 18).
Quotable: "I've seen some growth, character wise, in the basketball team. I'm encouraged. I think we're going to be far better this coming week then we were this." -- UO coach Kelly Graves
"I think the game could have gone a lot better. I don't think that we played any better than we did when we were there. I think that we need to step it up on defense, I think that's where we struggle. We have to put the ball in the basket. We're one of the better shooting teams in the Pac-12, but for some reason we just can't get that lid off of the hoop, so we've got to get it better." -- Alleyne
Up Next: Oregon is slated to host Washington at 8 p.m. on Jan. 18 at Matthew Knight Arena. Pac-12 Networks will televise the game.
