EUGENE, Ore. — Washington burst out of the halftime break by making eight of its first 10 shots to pull away from the Oregon women's basketball team and win 91-69 on Friday night in Matthew Knight Arena.
How It Happened: The Huskies showed signs of things to come by making their first four three-point attempts to lead 18-5 out of the gates. Oregon got hot from long range to pull within 22-18, but Washington rallied to lead 40-31 at halftime.
The Huskies were shooting 44.1 percent at that point, then made 58.8 percent after halftime. Kelsey Plum — younger sister of former UO volleyball player Lauren Plum — led the way by making 7-of-9 after halftime to finish with 35 points. Washington's 8-of-10 start to the second half pushed the lead to 20 points for the first time, and it ultimately built to as much as 27.
Who Stood Out: Jillian Alleyne posted her second straight double-double and 14th of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Lexi Bando and Amanda Delgado added 11 points apiece, and Delgado had six assists, double her previous career high.
What It Means: The Ducks (8-8, 1-4 Pac-12) continue to adjust to the more methodical pace and defensive focus demanded by first-year coach Kelly Graves. He said he'd seen signs of progress in recent weeks, and the hope will be that Friday's step back was an aberration.
Quotable: "Defensively we got in a little slump in the beginning of the (second) half. We got out a little slow and we couldn't pick our feet up after that. We're getting better, we're going to keep working and we've just got to keep our heads up." — Delgado
"We struggle a little bit with communicating. If we talked and knew where we were supposed to be in rotations, it would help so much. Sometimes I think we're still in that learning phase and it shows on the court. It's going to take awhile. Going from a style that was run-and-gun, go, go, go …. we're running so many defenses, it's kind of like back to basics for us. Once we get it down, we'll be OK." — Alleyne
Odds and Ends: Guard Jordan Loera, who missed the first three games of the season with knee problems before playing in 11 straight, missed her second game in a row due to illness. … Walk-on guard Marie Berthuel made her second field goal of the season. … Chloe Stiles missed the game while attending to a personal matter, Graves said.
