STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 13 University of Oregon softball team (14-2) wrapped up the Libby Matson Tournament Monday with a convincing 9-1 win over host Pacific (7-3) at Bill Simoni Field.
Junior Jessica Moore (6-1) won her third contest of the trip and kept her 0.00 weekend ERA spotless to go along with five strikeouts, four walks, and two hits allowed in the five-inning start.
Afterward, Duck head coach Mike White received a scoreless inning from both junior Mikayla Endicott in the sixth (1K, 0 BB, 1 H) and senior Brittany Rumfelt in the seventh (2 K, 1 BB, 0 H).
With 11 hits from seven players, junior Christie Nieto led the Ducks at the plate with her 3-for-3 effort that included a pair of doubles in the third and seventh innings.
Two other Ducks collected a pair of hits - sophomore Samantha Pappas (2-for-4, 3 runs) and freshman Courtney Ceo (2-for-4).
UO relied on a four-run third inning to jump ahead early, then added three runs in the fourth, and single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to earn revenge. In their previous meeting, the Tigers won Saturday's tourney opener, 4-2, via a sixth-inning comeback.
In the third inning, junior shortstop Kelsey Chambers collected her third game-winning RBI of the trip with a one-out single.
That hit knocked in freshman Alexa Peterson who had walked to open the inning, and also scored Pappas who came home on an errant throw by the left fielder that sailed high into the corner of the backstop. Nieto followed with an RBI double to score Chambers, and sophomore Allie Burger added an RBI double of her own, two batters later.
Oregon opened the fourth with a pair of singles by Peterson and Pappas. Freshman Kailee Cuico and Chambers knocked them in, respectively, on a double and sacrifice fly, and Cuico then scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Kaitlin Vitek.
Pappas scored again in the sixth when she reached on an error, stole both second and third base, then scored on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, Nieto led off with a double, and after a pair of strikeouts, Ceo cranked her first career triple to right center field to score the game's final run.
Pacific starter Nikki Armagost (3-2) made her first start of the weekend, struck out four, walked three, gave up five hits, and all four of her runs allowed were earned. She was relieved by Tori Shepard (1.1 IP, 0 K, 0 BB, 4 H, 3ER) and Shaina Brock (3.0 IP, 3 K, 0 BB, 2 H, 2 UE runs).
Three Tiger hitters came away with hits - Lindsey Pierce, Nicole Matson and Megan Allen - and all three were infield singles.
Stranding nine runners during the game, Pacific scored its lone run in the fifth inning.
After a one-out walk and no play by the third baseman on a grounder, the runners advanced to second and third on an infield out. The next hitter knocked in the run on a fielding error at first base. The Tigers then loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, but Moore ended the inning with a strikeout looking.
Combined for the five games in the tourney, Kelsey Chambers led UO starters in batting (.444), homers (2), RBI (7), slugging (1.111), sacrifice flies (2), and on-base percentage (.462).
Five other Duck regulars topped .300 - Nieto (.444, 4 H, 2 2B, 4 BB), Pappas (.385, 5 H, 1 HR, 3 RBI), sophomore Kaylan Howard (.375, 3 H, 1 BB), Ceo (.313, 5 H, 1 3B, 1 RB, 1 BB) and Burger (.308, 4 H, 1 2B, 2 RBI).
Two Duck pitchers staked 0.00 ERA's - Moore (3-0, 16 IP, 19 SO, 9 BB, 6 H,, 1 CG, 1 SHO /1 CBO) and junior Samantha Skillingstad (1-0, 13.2 IP, 18 SO, 7 BB, 7 H, 1 CG, 1 CBO).
Skillingstad also climbed a spot on the school's all-time career strikeouts chart to sixth on Sunday (344), and passed former All-American Katie Wiese (seventh, 336). The Spokane, Wash., native likewise joined the career shutouts list (10th, 7), while Moore (6) is one behind.
Earlier in the tournament, UO posted three wins by shutout over San Jose State (8-0, 5 innings, 6-0) and Santa Clara (1-0).
Looking ahead, Oregon returns to action next weekend in the ESPN Rise Tournament in Orlando, Fla., Friday-Saturday, March 4-6. UO first faces North Carolina and Virginia on Friday, then takes on No. 2 Alabama and No. 15 Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, and Illinois and Illinois State on Sunday.
All six Duck foes have received votes in recent national polls and were NCAA tournament qualifiers last season, while the Rajun Cajuns and Tide advanced to the Super Regional stage with the Ducks.
